A dedicated Mahadev Than Conservation Committee has also been established to support the site’s preservation, management, and further development. These initiatives aim to safeguard the shrine’s historical and religious value while providing a more convenient experience for devotees visiting the area.

Hatuwagadhi Rural Municipality Chairperson Prem Kumar Rai said Mahadev Than is an important religious and tourism site for the locality. He explained that the municipality has been working to preserve its historical, religious, and cultural significance while developing the infrastructure needed to support visitors.

According to Rai, conservation activities and improvements to access have already made visits more convenient for devotees. Continued attention to site management and infrastructure could further strengthen Mahadev Than’s appeal as a destination for religious travel and cultural exploration in eastern Nepal.

Religious Festivals Revive Mahadev Than’s Cultural Significance

Religious activities at Mahadev Than have gained renewed momentum following the revival of a local fair that had remained suspended for a long period for various reasons. With efforts from local residents and support from the rural municipality, the fair has resumed, bringing renewed attention to the shrine’s traditions and community significance.

Since 2080 BS, the municipality has also been organizing worship ceremonies and the ritual of scattering Sadbeeja, sacred seeds associated with Hindu religious observances. These activities have helped restore the site’s role as a place of worship and gathering for local communities and visiting devotees.

The shrine becomes particularly active during Bala Chaturdashi, when devotees gather for religious ceremonies, devotional singing, and the local fair. The festival provides an opportunity for visitors to experience the area’s spiritual traditions while learning about the religious practices maintained by the surrounding communities.

The revival of these events has also helped reconnect residents with a longstanding place of worship. With regular religious activities and improved facilities, Mahadev Than has the potential to attract more visitors interested in Nepal’s lesser known pilgrimage sites and local cultural traditions.

Natural Caves and Religious Heritage Add to Tourism Appeal

The natural landscape surrounding Mahadev Than is another feature contributing to its growing tourism potential. Local resident Lal Bahadur Pradhan said the site’s cave formations make it particularly attractive, while religious beliefs associated with the shrine encourage devotees from different places to visit. According to local tradition, worshippers believe that offering prayers at Mahadev Than can help fulfil their wishes.

The combination of natural features and spiritual significance gives the destination an identity that extends beyond its function as a local place of worship. The shrine premises contain caves alongside statues of various Hindu deities, creating an environment where religious heritage and natural scenery come together.

Kumar Bista, Ward Chairperson of Hatuwagadhi 1, said these features make Mahadev Than significant from both religious and tourism perspectives. He noted that ward and rural municipality authorities have been continuing conservation and infrastructure development initiatives to protect the site and improve its facilities. Bista added that systematic development could help establish the area’s identity more widely and encourage greater domestic tourist arrivals, creating opportunities for the surrounding communities.
