Rhino Cruise: Nepal Enters New Era of Luxury Water Tourism on Narayani River

Nepal has officially launched its first large-scale luxury water tourism service with the inauguration of the Rhino Cruise Narayani River, offering travelers an unparalleled river-based leisure experience. Operating from the scenic banks of Gaindakot, the cruise integrates religious, cultural, and natural tourism, providing a fresh perspective of the Narayani River and its surrounding biodiversity. Following its successful inauguration on Sunday evening, the cruise has commenced regular trips, promising both domestic and international visitors a combination of luxury, relaxation, and exploration.

Rhino Cruise Narayani River Launched

The initiative, led by Rhino Water Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. in collaboration with Hotel River Crown, is designed to transform the Nawalpur–Chitwan corridor into a premier hub for river tourism. The cruise marks a significant milestone in Nepal’s efforts to diversify its tourism products beyond trekking and mountaineering, introducing a modern water-based leisure concept to the country.

Strategic Objectives and Tourism Connectivity

The Rhino Cruise project is strategically designed to link Nepal’s key cultural, religious, and natural landmarks via the Narayani River, turning it into a natural highway for tourists. Key sites along the route include:

  • Devghat Dham: A major confluence revered by Hindu pilgrims.
  • Maulakalika Temple: A hilltop shrine in Gaindakot attracting devotees.
  • Valmiki Ashram: A historically and religiously significant site.
  • Chitwan National Park: Gateway to wildlife tourism in Sauraha.

The long-term vision is to create a seamless tourism circuit, where river experiences, luxury hospitality, and cultural exploration drive economic growth in the Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.

Modern Vessel Design and Passenger Safety

The cruise vessel spans 95 feet in length and 21 feet in width, standing two and a half storeys tall, blending modern engineering with leisure design. While capable of accommodating 200 passengers, the management has capped the number at 150 per trip to ensure comfort and safety.

Safety remains a top priority. Managing Director Deepak Dhungel confirmed that every passenger is insured up to 1 million rupees, and the vessel can navigate safely under variable water flows and high wind conditions. Each trip lasts approximately one hour, offering opportunities for photography, sightseeing, and dining along the riverbanks.

Cruise Packages and Onboard Dining

The Rhino Cruise offers a range of packages catering to different budgets and experiences:

Cruise TypePrice (NPR)Highlights

The cruise also functions as a premium venue for weddings, Bratabandha, Pasni ceremonies, and corporate events, providing an alternative to traditional land-based venues along the Narayani riverbank.

Government Support and Infrastructure

The launch has received strong support from Gaindakot Municipality, with Mayor Madan Bhakta Adhikari pledging assistance to ensure river safety, remove underwater obstacles, and explore route extensions toward Triveni Dham, further enhancing religious tourism potential.

The total investment in the cruise and hotel infrastructure is 500 million rupees, creating direct employment for 50 residents and increasing demand for agricultural products and local services.

Economic Impact and Future Vision

Representatives from the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) consider the Rhino Cruise a catalyst for regional growth. By attracting tourists who may otherwise only visit Sauraha or Pokhara, Gaindakot is establishing itself as a standalone water tourism hub.

Plans include introducing advanced vessels and expanding docking facilities to accommodate increased international visitors, particularly from India and China, aligning with Nepal’s strategy to diversify and upscale its tourism offerings.

Nigalo Hotel Limited

The Rhino Cruise on the Narayani River is more than a leisure ride; it symbolizes Nepal’s emergence in luxury water tourism. Combining safety, comfort, scenic beauty, and cultural connectivity, the cruise offers travelers a unique experience that blends nature, heritage, and modern hospitality, positioning Gaindakot as a premier river tourism destination.
