Nepal joined the global celebration of World Wetlands Day with a call for increased conservation efforts to protect the country’s invaluable wetland ecosystems. A special program was organized in Chitwan by Better Chitwan Way Group Nepal, in collaboration with several other environmental organizations, to highlight the importance of wetlands in biodiversity, climate resilience, and local livelihoods.
Wetlands play a crucial role in sustaining ecosystems, serving as habitats for countless species, regulating water cycles, and acting as natural barriers against climate change. Nepal is home to 10 Ramsar-listed wetlands, including Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve and Rara Lake, which require active conservation to maintain their ecological balance.

During the event, environmental advocates, conservationists, and local community members gathered to discuss strategies for wetland preservation. Participants emphasized the urgent need for responsible tourism, pollution control, and sustainable management practices to protect these fragile ecosystems. “Wetlands are the lifeblood of our planet. Protecting them is not just an environmental duty but a responsibility toward future generations,” remarked one of the attendees.
The event concluded with a pledge to promote wetland conservation at both local and national levels. Stakeholders urged the government and citizens to take proactive steps in ensuring the sustainability of Nepal’s wetlands through policy enforcement, awareness campaigns, and community engagement. As Nepal continues to face environmental challenges, such initiatives serve as a vital reminder that every effort counts in preserving the natural heritage of the country.
