Nepal’s tourism sector continued its steady recovery in 2025, with international arrivals rising by 1.3 percent to reach 1.16 million, according to the country’s latest Economic Survey 2082/83. The growth reflects sustained global interest in Nepal as a travel destination, supported by improving connectivity and diversified tourism offerings. The trend indicates that its tourism industry is maintaining a stable upward trajectory following post-pandemic recovery efforts.

Longer Stays Reflect Changing Travel Patterns
One of the key highlights of the survey is the significant increase in average visitor stay, which rose to 16.34 days. This suggests that Nepal is successfully attracting travelers who prefer extended experiences, particularly in trekking, cultural exploration, and spiritual tourism. However, the report also notes a decline in per-tourist daily spending, which fell to US$33.08 from US$40.84 in 2024. This decrease is attributed in part to improved digital tracking systems that now provide more accurate expenditure data.
Tourism Earnings Grow Despite Spending Dip
Despite lower daily spending, total tourism earnings increased by 4.8 percent, reaching Rs 87.37 billion. The rise in total revenue indicates that longer visitor stays and higher arrival numbers have helped offset reduced per-day expenditure. The data highlights a shift in Nepal’s tourism dynamics, toward longer but lower-spending visits, signaling the need for enhanced value-added tourism products and premium experiences to increase per-capita revenue.

Strong Long-Term Sector Performance
Over the past decade, Nepal has welcomed 8.38 million foreign tourists, underscoring the resilience and recovery strength of the sector. This long-term growth reflects Nepal’s continued positioning as a leading destination for adventure, nature, and cultural tourism.
May 2026 Brings Further Momentum
Adding to the positive outlook, its tourism sector recorded 102,626 International Visitor Arrivals (IVAs) in May 2026 alone. This monthly performance highlights strong recovery momentum and sustained growth in inbound tourism. The rising arrivals indicate increasing global interest in Nepal as a premier travel destination, particularly among leisure and experiential travelers.

Outlook: Focus on Value and Experience
While Nepal’s tourism industry is expanding steadily, experts suggest a strategic shift toward high-value tourism products is essential. Enhancing premium services, improving infrastructure, and diversifying tourism experiences could help increase per-capita spending and ensure sustainable long-term growth.
