Nepal’s Hotel and Restaurant Industry Generates Over 109 Billion Rupees Annually

The hotel and restaurant industry in Nepal plays a significant role in the nation’s economy, contributing a staggering 109.27 billion rupees annually, according to the results of the National Statistics Office’s first Integrated National Hotel and Restaurant Survey, 2080. The survey, based on data from the fiscal year 2079/80, highlights the sector’s crucial position in Nepal’s economic landscape.

The survey revealed that there are 142,223 lodging and food service establishments across the country, employing a total of 387,747 individuals. Of these, 106,459 are salaried employees. The industry generated services worth 326.14 billion rupees while incurring costs of 216.73 billion rupees, demonstrating its substantial contribution to both economic growth and employment.

Fixed assets in the hotel and restaurant industry amounted to 543.25 billion rupees, underscoring the sector’s significant investment in infrastructure. Additionally, the survey found that 20.61 billion rupees were spent on salaries, bonuses, and benefits for employees and workers in the industry.

The survey also noted that around 28.4 percent of establishments have taken loans from financial institutions, while the majority, 71.6 percent, operate without loans. This data highlights the sector’s resilience and varying financial strategies.

Covering a broader range of establishments than the previous 2060 Hotel and Lodge Survey, the latest study includes a diverse list of businesses, such as star hotels, non-star hotels, resorts, lodges, homestays, guesthouses, hostels, restaurants, and catering/party palaces, reflecting the growth and expansion of Nepal’s hospitality sector.

This comprehensive survey provides valuable insights into the current state of Nepal’s hotel and restaurant industry, shedding light on its contribution to the economy and its importance as a major employer in the country.
