The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and Chumanuwri Rural Municipality held a productive and constructive discussion on the preparations for the 70th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Mount Manaslu. The meeting took place today at the NMA Secretariat in Nagpokhari, Naxal, focusing on coordination and collaboration for the upcoming historic celebration.
The discussion was attended by NMA President Mr. Fur Gelje Sherpa, General Secretary Mr. Rajendra Bahadur Lama, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Mr. Jinesh Sindurakar, Chairperson of Chumanuwri Rural Municipality Mr. Nima Lama, and Vice Chairperson Ms. Laxmi Gurung. Participants emphasized the importance of joint efforts between national mountaineering bodies and local governments to ensure a meaningful and well-organized commemoration.
Honoring a Historic Himalayan Milestone by NMA
The meeting centered on honoring the legacy of Mount Manaslu, the world’s eighth-highest peak, and its significance in Nepal’s mountaineering history. Stakeholders discussed ways to highlight the historical importance of the first successful ascent, celebrate the contributions of climbers and local communities, and promote Manaslu as a globally significant mountaineering and trekking destination.
Both parties underscored the need to integrate cultural, tourism, and conservation aspects into the anniversary programs, ensuring that the celebration reflects not only mountaineering achievements but also the heritage and livelihoods of communities in the Manaslu region.
Coordination for a Meaningful Celebration
During the discussion, emphasis was placed on coordination between NMA and Chumanuwri Rural Municipality for program planning, logistical arrangements, and stakeholder engagement. The meeting also explored opportunities to involve mountaineers, tourism entrepreneurs, residents, and youth in the anniversary events to strengthen local ownership and national pride.
The 70th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Mount Manaslu is scheduled to be celebrated on 9 May, marking a significant milestone in Nepal’s Himalayan history.
