The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has launched a new digital film series examining how tourism can deliver long-term economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits across the Asia Pacific region.
Launched on September 8, 2026, in partnership with strategic content creator Content With Purpose (CWP), Pacific Asia: Tourism with Purpose uses documentary films, expert interviews and real world case studies to examine how destinations and tourism businesses are responding to climate pressures, changing traveler expectations, technological development and the growing need for inclusive and resilient tourism.
New Series Focuses On Tourism Beyond Visitor Numbers
The series has been launched during PATA’s 75th anniversary year and looks at how the region’s tourism sector can prepare for a changing operating environment. Rather than focusing only on visitor growth, the films examine how tourism can be managed to protect destinations while ensuring that communities benefit from the economic opportunities created by the visitor economy.

PATA said the project brings together tourism leaders, destination organisations, businesses, educational institutions and other industry stakeholders to highlight practical approaches to destination stewardship, climate action, community participation, responsible innovation and workforce development. The initiative is intended to demonstrate how tourism can contribute to destinations while addressing pressures that could affect their long-term sustainability.
Destinations And Communities Take Centre Stage
The digital series features stories from across the Asia Pacific region, highlighting different approaches to managing tourism and strengthening local communities. Among the featured cases are community-led responses to overtourism in Hawaii, tourism enterprises in Lao PDR linking conservation with local livelihoods, and destination initiatives in the Philippines and Thailand that explore the relationship between tourism, local communities and economic development.
Other films examine how education can contribute to the preservation of cultural identity, how Indigenous knowledge is being incorporated into stewardship efforts in the Marianas, and how hospitality businesses are reconsidering sustainability, luxury and long-term value. Together, the stories present different ways destinations and tourism operators are attempting to balance visitor demand with the protection of local resources and community interests.

The project includes contributions from organisations such as Hainan University, Arizona State University International Tourism College, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, Hong Kong Metropolitan University Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, Marianas Visitor Authority, Song Saa, The Luxury Signature and Travelife.
Tourism Leaders From Across Region Contribute
The series also brings together perspectives from tourism executives, policymakers, academics and industry practitioners. Contributors include PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid, Insook Lee of the Korea Tourism Organization, TTG Asia Media Group Editor Karen Yu, Deepak Joshi, Advisor to the PATA Nepal Chapter, PATA Ambassador for Greater China Soon-Hwa Wong and Yang Li, Head of Public Affairs for Asia Pacific at Booking.com.
The participation of tourism representatives from different parts of the region is intended to provide a broader view of the challenges facing the visitor economy. The series covers issues ranging from destination management and climate resilience to technology, skills development, regional cooperation and the role of tourism businesses in supporting local economies.
PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid said the initiative reflects the association’s effort to share practical solutions and encourage collaboration as it marks its 75th anniversary. He said the stories demonstrate how responsible leadership, innovation and cooperation can generate longer-term benefits for destinations and communities.

Digital Platform Highlights Future Of Responsible Tourism
The series was previewed during PATA Travel Mart 2026 before its official digital launch on September 8. It is designed for tourism professionals, destination management organisations, government agencies, businesses, educators, researchers, students, investors and communities involved in shaping tourism across the region.
The project also supports PATA’s broader focus on knowledge sharing, networking, innovation and tourism resilience. Its themes include sustainable tourism and climate action, responsible use of technology, workforce and leadership development, crisis preparedness, regional connectivity and the wider social and economic contribution of tourism.
Produced by Content With Purpose in partnership with PATA, Pacific Asia: Tourism with Purpose is now available to watch for free online, allowing tourism stakeholders and the wider public to access the documentary series and explore examples of how destinations across the region are attempting to build a more resilient and responsible visitor economy.
