Pokhara Street Festival Gears Up for Its 27th Edition at Lakeside

Blessed with breathtaking natural beauty, Pokhara, widely known as Nepal’s tourism capital, is preparing to host the 27th edition of the Pokhara Street Festival, the country’s largest and longest-running street festival. Organized continuously for the past 26 years, the festival has become an iconic celebration of food, culture, music, and tourism in the heart of Lakeside, Pokhara.

Organized by the Restaurant and Bar Association Nepal (REBAN), Pokhara, the 27th Pokhara Street Festival will take place from Poush 13 to 17, 2082 (December 28–January 1), coinciding with the English New Year celebrations. The five-day festival will stretch across approximately 3.5 kilometers along the scenic lakeside of Fewa Lake, transforming the area into a vibrant pedestrian-only cultural corridor.

Held under the popular slogan “Eat on the Street, Dance on the Street, Celebrate on the Street,” the festival has grown into a hallmark event not only for Pokhara but for Nepal’s overall tourism promotion.

A Festival with Historical Significance

Before the inception of this Street Festival, celebrating the English New Year often meant traveling abroad to destinations such as India, Goa, or Thailand. Over the years, however, the festival has successfully reversed this trend, firmly establishing Pokhara as a premier destination for English New Year celebrations.

Today, the Pokhara Street Festival is no longer just an annual event; it has become an integral part of it’s identity, brand image, and tourism legacy. Its uninterrupted continuity over more than two and a half decades reflects the city’s resilience and commitment to sustainable tourism development.

Throughout its long journey, Nepal’s tourism sector has faced numerous challenges, including political instability, the devastating earthquake of 2015, the global COVID-19 pandemic, and, more recently, social and generational movements that affected visitor flows. Despite these adversities, the festival has consistently played a revitalizing role, helping revive tourism activity and sending a strong message to the world that “It is safe, open, and welcoming.” This unwavering continuity has paved the way for the upcoming 27th edition.

Tourism Promotion and Economic Impact

Pokhara itself is often described as an open museum, enriched with natural landscapes, cultural diversity, and adventure tourism opportunities. The Pokhara Street Festival reinforces this identity while significantly contributing to tourism promotion and local economic growth.

The festival is particularly effective in energizing tourism during the winter season, a period when visitor numbers traditionally slow down. By promoting the message of “Pokhara for All Seasons,” the event encourages year-round tourism.

In addition, the festival provides a vital platform for showcasing and selling local agricultural products, handicrafts, and homegrown goods from Pokhara and surrounding rural areas, thereby strengthening local and rural economies. By encouraging foreign tourists to celebrate Christmas and the New Year in Nepal, the festival also directly contributes to foreign currency earnings.

Major Attractions and Key Features

The Pokhara Street Festival offers a wide range of attractions designed to appeal to both domestic and international visitors:
