Pokhara, the city where the tranquil Fewa Lake reflects the majestic Machhapuchhre, is alive with the warmth of Chaitra winds and the festive spirit of the New Year. The city is now fully immersed in preparations for its long-standing celebration of culture, tourism, and gastronomy. The Hotel Association of Pokhara has intensified efforts for the 21st edition of the Fewa New Year Festival, scheduled to run from 29 Chaitra to 1 Baishakh at Lakeside.
Two Decades of Tradition and Tourism Revival in Pokhara
The festival marks a continuation of its two-decade-long journey of promoting tourism despite challenges. In the early 2060s BS (2000s AD), when the country faced political instability, and the shadow of conflict slowed tourism, this street festival was launched to attract visitors by combining tourism, culture, and local cuisine in one vibrant experience. Now, entering its 21st year, the festival has established a strong legacy, drawing both domestic and international tourists to the lakeside city.
Optimism and Tourist Expectations
At a press conference held in Pokhara on Thursday, Laxman Subedi, President of the Hotel Association of Pokhara and Festival Coordinator, shared encouraging projections. “This year, we expect around 300,000 domestic and international tourists to visit the tourism capital of Nepal,” he said. “We are confident that hotel occupancy will exceed 90 percent during the festival period.”
To rejuvenate tourism in the region, the association has launched the ‘Let’s Go Pokhara’ campaign, reaching out to cities in eastern Nepal and the Lumbini Province. To further attract visitors, affiliated hotels are offering up to 25% discounts on published rates. Additionally, 10% cashback is available for hotel bookings made through e-Sewa, making the festival more accessible and appealing to travelers.
