Preserving Nag-Chhanga: Bhojpur’s Tourism Focus

The historic and religiously significant site Nag-Chhanga, located in Ramprasad Rai Rural Municipality of Bhojpur, is now gaining attention from the local government. With an aim to preserve and promote the area, the rural municipality has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and initiated conservation efforts for this unique destination.

Nag-Chhanga is known for its mystical rock formations, where images of serpents (Nag) appear naturally embedded in stone, astonishing visitors and devotees alike. According to local resident Rajan Ghimire, people believe that worshipping at this sacred site helps fulfill personal wishes and desires.

Despite its religious and natural significance, the site has long remained in obscurity due to the lack of proper publicity. Ward Chairman Ekaraj Acharya of Ward No. 6 noted that Nag-Chhanga lies at the border of Baikunthhe (Ward No. 6) and Dhodlekhani (Ward No. 2), and that efforts are now being made to highlight its cultural and religious importance through active promotion and preservation.

In addition to Nag-Chhanga, several other religious and natural landmarks in the region, including Gangakhola, Golme Rajagolme, Ranibhir, and Tham Danda, are being prioritized for promotion by the local ward office. Chairman Acharya emphasized that there are ancient legends associated with Nag-Chhanga one of which suggests that real serpents once resided in this location. “Nag-Chhanga is a historic site, and we are currently conducting research into its legendary origins,” he added.

As part of the development plan, the rural municipality has constructed a foot trail to the site aimed at enhancing accessibility for pilgrims and tourists. Additional infrastructure such as toilets and resting spots have also been established to accommodate visitors. According to Rural Municipality Chairperson Thambahadur Rai, nearly NPR 6 million has been invested across various fiscal years for the development and conservation of this region.

“Despite being a renowned religious location, Nag-Chhanga has remained neglected due to limited promotion,” said Chairperson Rai. “We are now dedicated to preserving this sacred site while also uncovering its historical and cultural significance.”

The municipality has also expressed plans to conduct further exploration into the lesser-known aspects of the site, aiming to develop Nag-Chhanga as a key religious tourism destination. With the strong faith of the local community anchoring these efforts, the local government hopes that Nag-Chhanga will soon receive the recognition it deserves.
