Six Injured in Clash Over Cable Car Construction in Pathibhara, Taplejung

A clash between supporters and opponents of the proposed cable car construction in Pathibhara, Taplejung, left six people injured. The incident, which occurred today, involved two supporters of the cable car, one opponent, one other resident, and two security personnel.

According to the District Police Office, the injured include Damodar Adhikari (40) from Fungling Municipality-4 and Kumar Sherpa (26) from Meringden Rural Municipality-4, both supporting the cable car project. Among the opponents, Chandra Maden (45) from Fungling Municipality-4 was injured, while Arjun Limbu from Faktanglung Rural Municipality-5, who works in the Pathibhara area, also sustained injuries.

Additionally, security personnel DIGendra Oli from the Armed Police Force and Police Constable Abinash Majhi were injured. All injured individuals are receiving treatment at the district hospital and local health centers.

The clash reportedly began when opponents attempted to block an excavator brought to lay the foundation stone for the cable car construction. Tensions escalated, leading to stone-pelting between the two sides. To control the situation, a police team led by Inspector Vivek Basnet from the District Police Office was deployed. Under instructions from the Chief District Officer, the team temporarily seized the excavator’s keys to prevent further conflict, but a scuffle ensued between the supporters and opponents of the project.

The incident highlights the ongoing local tensions regarding the cable car project in the revered Pathibhara region, with concerns raised from both developmental and conservation perspectives.
