Nepal is currently experiencing the partial impact of a low-pressure weather system, resulting in cloudy skies, rainfall, and widespread snowfall across several parts of the country, according to the Weather Forecasting Division (WFD). The changing weather pattern has significantly affected daily life, transportation, and tourism activities, particularly in the hilly and mountainous regions.
Cloudy Skies and Rainfall Forecast Across Provinces
The WFD reported that cloud cover is expected to persist in the hilly and mountainous regions throughout the afternoon, with partial cloudiness forecast in some hill areas and the Tarai. Moderate snowfall and rainfall are likely in the high hills and mountainous regions, while moderate rainfall is expected in parts of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces. Light rainfall has also been forecast for Bagmati, Madhes, and the hilly regions of Koshi Province.
In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the Division has urged concerned authorities and the general public to remain alert, warning that the situation may affect daily life, tourism activities, health services, as well as air and road transportation.
Heavy Snowfall Reported in Baitadi and Baglung
Baitadi district witnessed heavy snowfall from early Wednesday morning, particularly in upper belt areas including Sigas, Khodpe, Anarkholi, and Dholyamod. Local resident Raj Bahadur Ter said that while the sharp drop in temperature has disrupted daily activities, farmers are pleased with the snowfall, hoping it will be beneficial for winter crops such as wheat.
Similarly, higher regions of Baglung district, including the Dhorpatan Valley, have been experiencing continuous snowfall since Tuesday night. Reports indicate that the entire valley and surrounding areas have been blanketed in thick layers of snow. Extreme cold conditions have led to water freezing in taps, while mobility has been severely restricted. Snowfall has also covered areas such as Nishikhola, Patihalne, Khanikhola, and Nisheldhor. Despite the difficulties, local residents expressed optimism, noting that snowfall plays a crucial role in supporting winter agriculture.
Mustang Roads Blocked as Snow Accumulates
In the Mustang district, heavy snowfall has disrupted road transportation, with the Kagbeni–Korala roadway blocked after snow accumulation reached nearly two feet. The obstruction has stranded vehicles and affected the movement of goods and people in the region.
Roshan Thakali, Chief of the Agriculture Section at Gharapjhong Rural Municipality, stated that winter snowfall is vital for local agriculture. He explained that crops such as apples, buckwheat, barley, and potatoes greatly benefit from snow, which helps retain soil moisture and protects crops from extreme frost.
Snowfall Affects Multiple Karnali Districts
In the Karnali region, snowfall has been reported in Humla, Mugu, Dolpa, Jumla, and Kalikot districts since Tuesday night. Shankar Khadka, Chief of the District Police Office, confirmed that roads in Limi, Nyalu, Yari, and Hilsa areas have been obstructed due to snow accumulation of up to one foot, affecting transportation and emergency services.
Security agencies have been mobilized to monitor the situation, while local authorities are coordinating efforts to reopen blocked routes as weather conditions permit.
Bajura Sees Extensive Snow Coverage
Bajura district has also experienced heavy snowfall, covering wide areas including Badimalika, Budhiganga Triveni, Budhinanda, Himali, Khaptad Chhededaha, Gaumul, Swamikartik, and Jagannath. Jashiram Sahani, Chief of the Agriculture Knowledge Centre in Bajura, said that although the harsh weather has severely affected daily life, the snowfall is extremely beneficial for winter crops.
He added that snowfall improves soil fertility and moisture levels, which are essential for crops grown during the winter season.
Authorities on Alert as Weather Monitoring Continues
Authorities across affected districts continue to closely monitor the situation. Travelers, tourists, and residents in snow-affected areas have been advised to take necessary precautions, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official weather updates.
The WFD has stated that further updates will be issued based on the evolving weather pattern, urging people to remain vigilant until conditions gradually improve.
