The Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), the umbrella organization for trekking operators in the country, has proposed that foreign tourists be allowed to trek alone in restricted areas, rather than in groups of two or more.
TAAN General Secretary Sonam Gyalzen Sherpa, in a statement released today, urged the government to revise the current rule that mandates a minimum of two foreign trekkers per group in restricted regions, allowing solo trekkers to obtain permits.
Appreciation for Government’s Permit Fee Decision
TAAN also expressed gratitude to the federal government for its recent decision, as per the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, to amend Schedule 12 of the Immigration Regulation, 2051. This amendment set the trekking permit fee for foreign nationals visiting Upper Mustang at USD 50 per person.
Calls for Fee Based on Actual Stay
TAAN President Sagar Pandey highlighted that the recent road network development has shortened trekking durations in restricted areas. He emphasized that the trekking permit fees should be calculated based on the actual number of days a tourist spends in the restricted zone. This has been a long-standing demand of the association.
Suggestion for Upper Dolpa and Other Restricted Areas
Pandey further recommended that the same principle be applied to other restricted regions, such as Upper Dolpa. Foreign tourists trekking in these areas should have their permit fees calculated according to the actual duration of their stay, rather than fixed durations currently mandated. He urged the government to amend the regulations to ensure a fair and practical fee system.
