The Thamel Tourism Development Council has stepped beyond its tourism-sector role to support communities devastated by the recent floods in Rasuwa, delivering essential relief supplies to 120 affected households in Uttargaya Rural Municipality-1 and 2. The council’s relief initiative targeted families directly affected by the destructive flooding of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, which caused widespread damage in Rasuwa and disrupted the lives and livelihoods of local communities.
A team led by Council President Rajuman Dangol spent two days in the affected areas, distributing the relief materials in coordination with the local government. Dangol said the initiative was intended to provide immediate support to families struggling to meet their basic needs following the disaster.
Food and Essential Supplies Reach Affected Families
The council provided a substantial quantity of food and daily necessities, including 125 sacks of rice, 150 kg of lentils, 100 liters of cooking oil, 175 kg of salt, 50 kg of soybeans and 75 kg of chiura. The assistance also included noodles, biscuits and juice, providing affected households with ready-to-consume food alongside staple supplies.
Recognizing the immediate need for clothing and household essentials, the council distributed 370 pieces of ready-made clothing, including T-shirts, trousers, jackets and sarees. It also provided 200 pairs of shoes, 200 pairs of slippers, 52 quilts, 16 mattresses, 20 blankets and 85 pillows. Kitchen supplies, including 100 plates, 100 glasses, pressure cookers, frying pans, and spoons, were also included in the relief package. Health and sanitation materials such as oral rehydration solution, medicines, bandages, sanitary pads and toilet paper were distributed to help families manage basic health and hygiene needs in the aftermath of the flood.
Tourism Sector Extends Support Beyond Business
Council General Secretary Pashupati Kandel said the relief campaign reflects the tourism sector’s commitment to supporting communities during times of crisis. As a leading tourism organization based in Thamel, the council has undertaken similar initiatives during natural disasters as part of its corporate and social responsibility efforts. This latest assistance, it said, represents an attempt to stand with flood-affected communities while they recover from the devastating impact of the disaster.
The relief team included Council President Rajuman Dangol, First Vice President Rajiv Pandey, Second Vice President Dawang Tamang, General Secretary Pashupati Kandel, Secretary Dilip Kandel, Treasurer Kinchu Lamu Bhutiya (Shrestha), and executive committee members Bishwa Man Pradhan and Anil Regmi, among others. The initiative highlights how Nepal’s tourism industry can contribute not only to economic activity but also to community resilience and humanitarian support during natural disasters.
