The serene birthplace of Lord Buddha, Lumbini, witnessed the commencement of the Third Lumbini International Peace Festival on Thursday, drawing international participants and dignitaries to promote global harmony, spirituality, and peace. Jointly organized by the Nepal Tourism Board and the Embassy of China in Nepal, the three-day festival aims to position Lumbini as a global hub for spiritual tourism while celebrating the timeless message of compassion and non-violence.
Inaugural Ceremony Highlights Relevance of Buddha’s Teachings
The festival’s inauguration ceremony was graced by Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Anil Kumar Sinha, who addressed the gathering as the chief guest. Minister Sinha emphasized that in today’s world, marked by conflicts and instability, Buddha’s teachings of compassion, non-violence, and coexistence are more relevant than ever.
“Lumbini is once again asserting its role as a spiritual center for the world,” Minister Sinha remarked. He highlighted that participation from representatives across various countries has transformed the festival into a truly international platform. The minister further noted that Nepal seeks to strengthen its identity as a center for spiritual tourism and foster collaboration with the global community.
China Reaffirms Commitment to Peace
Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chang Maoming, highlighted the growing global need for peace amid international uncertainties. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to pursuing peaceful development and cooperating with peace-promoting nations worldwide.
Ambassador Chang described Lumbini as a universal symbol of peace and emphasized the longstanding cultural and spiritual ties between Nepal and China. “This festival will strengthen the historical friendship and Buddhist connections between our two countries,” he said, expressing confidence that the event will contribute to international understanding and cooperation.
Sports as a Medium for Peace
The Chairperson of the Nepal Olympic Committee, Jeevan Ram Shrestha, stressed that Lumbini is a shared heritage of all humanity and a platform for promoting the universal values of peace, coexistence, and human dignity. He underlined that the festival incorporates sports as a means to spread these messages globally.
Among the festival activities is the International Peace Marathon, which aims to convey values of non-violence, unity, and brotherhood through athletic participation. Shrestha emphasized that sports can act as a powerful catalyst for development and social harmony.
Meditation and Spiritual Practices Take Center Stage
In his welcome remarks, Vice Chairperson of the Lumbini Development Trust, Larkel Lama, urged participants to put Buddha’s teachings into practice rather than treating them as abstract beliefs. He highlighted that meditation and disciplined spiritual practice are key pathways to attaining genuine inner peace.
“Lumbini is not just a destination for Buddhists but for anyone seeking harmony and inner transformation,” Lama noted. He described the festival as an opportunity for individuals to experience Lumbini’s unique spiritual environment, capable of turning ordinary life into a profound journey of mindfulness and compassion.
Festival Schedule and Highlights
The festival spans three days and includes a variety of spiritual and cultural activities. On Friday, a special meditation session will be held at the Maya Devi Temple, attracting both domestic and international participants. The International Peace Marathon will take place on Saturday, promoting global unity through sports.
Additionally, the festival features cultural performances, interactive sessions, and spiritual discourses designed to engage attendees and deepen their understanding of Buddha’s teachings. The combination of spirituality, art, and athleticism aims to create a holistic experience for participants and visitors alike.

According to Surya Thapaliya, Senior Manager at the Nepal Tourism Board, the festival, organized in collaboration with the Lumbini Development Trust, Nepal Olympic Committee, and other key stakeholders, reinforces Lumbini’s role as a global center for peace and spiritual tourism.
“This festival not only celebrates the legacy of Lord Buddha but also strengthens Nepal’s position on the world map as a destination for spiritual enrichment and cultural exchange,” Thapaliya said.
By blending meditation, cultural heritage, international dialogue, and sports, the Third Lumbini International Peace Festival aspires to leave a lasting imprint on participants and the global community, embodying the universal values of compassion, harmony, and coexistence.
