The Third Timbung International Trail Run is set to take place on September 10, as organizers prepare to bring athletes and adventure enthusiasts to one of eastern Nepal’s most spectacular high-altitude destinations.
The Timbung Pokhari Tourism Promotion Committee has announced the event as part of its efforts to promote Timbung Pokhari as an emerging trekking and adventure tourism destination while highlighting the wider tourism potential of the mountainous region bordering Taplejung and Panchthar districts.
21 Kilometer Mountain Challenge At More Than 4,000 Meters
According to Committee Chairman Amir Rai, the trail run will feature a demanding 21-kilometer mountain course designed to test participants through steep climbs, descents and rugged high-altitude terrain. The race will begin at Timbung Pokhari, located at approximately 4,350 meters above sea level, before descending toward Pangduwa at around 3,800 meters. From there, runners will face another challenging ascent toward Tholu Bhanjyang, situated at approximately 4,200 meters, making the competition a physically demanding test of endurance in a high Himalayan environment.
The unusual elevation profile is expected to make the Timbung International Trail Run different from conventional road races, with participants required to navigate natural mountain trails while coping with the demanding conditions associated with high altitude. The organizers see the challenging route itself as an important attraction, offering runners an opportunity to experience the landscape, altitude and natural environment of eastern Nepal while competing in an organized international-level trail event.
Cash Prizes And Trophies To Raise The Competition
The organizers have allocated approximately Rs 1.9 million for the overall organization of the event and have introduced cash prizes and trophies to encourage strong participation. The competition will be divided into open men’s, open women’s and local categories, allowing both competitive runners and athletes from the surrounding communities to take part. The prize structure is intended to add greater competitive value to an event that is also being positioned as a platform for tourism promotion.
In both the open men’s and open women’s categories, the winner will receive Rs 83,525 and the Timbung International Run trophy, while second place will receive Rs 63,525 and third place Rs 43,525, with trophies also awarded to the top three finishers. The local category has been introduced to recognize athletes from the area, with the winner set to receive Rs 33,525 along with a trophy, allowing local runners to compete and gain recognition on the same mountain trails.

Located along the Taplejung-Panchthar border, Timbung Pokhari and its surrounding mountain landscapes are regarded as areas with considerable potential for trekking and nature-based tourism. The high-altitude lake and its surrounding terrain offer visitors a combination of remote mountain scenery and challenging trails, while the area’s relative distance from major tourist hubs gives it the potential to attract travelers seeking less-explored destinations in Nepal.
Through the trail run, the Timbung Pokhari Tourism Promotion Committee aims to take the destination beyond its existing recognition and introduce it to a wider audience through adventure sports and tourism activities. Organizers believe that an international trail-running event can generate greater interest in the region, encourage visitors to explore the destination, and contribute to the development of tourism-related activities in surrounding communities.
