The scenic Bhairav Kunda in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality has recently witnessed a significant rise in tourist arrivals, drawing both religious pilgrims and nature enthusiasts. Revered by both Hindu and Buddhist devotees, the sacred lake holds deep spiritual significance, with the Sherpa community worshipping it as “Ama Chhyumen.”
High-Altitude Destination with Natural and Spiritual Appeal in Bhairav Kunda
Situated at an altitude of 4,124 meters above sea level, at the base of the Furbi Ghyachu pass (6,567m), Bhairav Kunda spans approximately 84,193 square meters, according to Rural Municipality Chairperson Pasang Norbu Sherpa. Although the exact depth of the lake remains unmeasured, its pristine waters and surrounding landscape continue to captivate visitors.
Adding to its charm, a 198-meter-high waterfall just below the lake enhances the area’s natural beauty. From the site, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Jugal Himalayan range, making it a unique blend of spiritual and scenic attraction.
Challenging Trek Rewards Visitors
Reaching Bhairav Kunda requires a physically demanding journey. The trek begins from Larcha along the Araniko Highway and involves steep uphill trails, taking approximately one-and-a-half to two days on foot. Despite the difficult terrain, visitors say the rewarding natural experience at the destination makes the journey worthwhile.
Religious Significance and Janai Purnima Festival
The lake sees a surge in visitors, especially during Janai Purnima, when thousands of devotees gather for ritual worships. According to local beliefs, Bhairav Kunda is associated with Lord Shiva and Parvati, and is regarded as a sacred site where wishes are fulfilled.
The area is also home to the historic Dugunagadhi fort, built during the 1911 BS war with Tibet in the time of Jung Bahadur Rana. The fort serves as an alternative route and an additional attraction for visitors.
Multiple Routes and Nearby Attractions
Apart from the Larcha route, the lake can also be accessed through Daklang, Kanglang, and Listi via the Ugarchandi Bhagwati Temple, passing through Chhagam, Bagam, and Chakormakor villages, according to local resident Bina Rokaya Adhikari.
Nearby, another significant religious site, Deudunga, attracts pilgrims. Located about 45 kilometers from Chaku and Hindi along the Kodari road, it lies near the Dolakha border and has also seen increasing numbers of devotees in recent years.
Growing Domestic and International Interest
Bhairav Kunda and surrounding areas have become increasingly popular among both domestic and foreign tourists. Pilgrims visit the site with the belief that their wishes will be fulfilled, while international visitors, particularly from China, India, Europe, the United States, and Japan, are drawn by its natural beauty and cultural significance.
Before the 2015 earthquake, around 1,000 foreign tourists visited the area annually, and locals say the numbers are gradually rising again. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views extending as far as Tibet’s Khasa and Kuti regions, and even glimpses of Kathmandu on clear days, making it a highly attractive viewpoint.
Rich Biodiversity and Natural Resources
The region is also known for its rich biodiversity and medicinal herbs, including yarsagumba, jatamansi, chiraito, and other valuable plants. Wildlife such as tigers, bears, leopards, wolves, wild boars, and even the elusive snow leopard inhabit the surrounding forests.
Plans for Infrastructure Development
Despite its growing popularity, the area still faces challenges due to limited infrastructure. Visitors often have to rely on temporary shelters such as chauri sheds during their travel. To address these issues, local authorities have announced plans to develop basic facilities, including drinking water points and resting places along the trail. Chairperson Sherpa said the rural municipality is also working toward improving trekking routes and eventually connecting the area by road.
Toward a Recognized Tourism Destination
Local officials believe that with proper management, infrastructure development, and promotion, Bhairav Kunda could become a major tourism destination in Nepal. Increased tourist arrivals could not only boost the local economy but also help establish Sindhupalchok as an internationally recognized travel destination.
