Turkish Airlines Flight TK-727 Makes Emergency Landing in Kolkata

A Turkish Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Istanbul experienced an engine failure shortly after takeoff on Wednesday afternoon, prompting an emergency diversion. The incident, while alarming, ended safely with all passengers and crew unharmed.

Engine Failure Shortly After Takeoff

Turkish Airlines Flight TK-727, operated with an Airbus A333 aircraft, departed Tribhuvan International Airport at 1:29 PM local time bound for Istanbul. According to Gyanendra Bhul, Information Officer at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the aircraft reported a fire in the right engine just minutes after taking off.

“The aircraft reported an engine fire two minutes after takeoff. It was not immediately clear which engine was affected,” Bhul stated. The flight, carrying a total of 225 passengers and 11 crew members, responded promptly to the situation, following standard emergency procedures.

Immediate Response and Diversion

Following the engine fire report, Kathmandu Approach Control instructed the aircraft to hold briefly over the Darke area while assessing the situation. Given the severity of the engine malfunction, the flight was diverted to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Calcutta (VECC) for a safe landing.

The aircraft’s estimated arrival time in Calcutta was 9:15 UTC (3:00 PM NPT), but the flight successfully landed at 3:03 PM NPT without incident. Airport and aviation officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among the 236 people on board.
