The historic and spiritual significance of the ancient Sauru Gumba, which is situated in Sauru village of Thasang Rural Municipality-2, has been restored to the local community through extensive renovations. Age and neglect had caused the 500-year-old monastery, a religious and cultural icon for the area, to gradually deteriorate. Pokhara-based philanthropists Madan and Balkumari Gauchan generously donated NPR 2.25 million to enable the renovation.

The Gumba Conservation and Management Committee’s chairperson, Subarna Gauchan, stated that the restoration involved significant repairs to the gumba’s exterior and interior. According to him, “we concentrated on maintaining the traditional architecture while making sure the structure is secure and useful for religious and cultural activities.”

Along with structural repairs, the monastery’s grounds have been concreted and equipped with electricity to enhance its usability. In order to better serve monks, devotees, and guests, the renovation also included building necessary infrastructure, such as restrooms.

The Gauchan couple has received appreciation from the community for helping to preserve an important aspect of the area’s history. It is anticipated that the revitalized Gumba will draw more pilgrims and tourists, boosting local cultural tourism.
