Heritage Walk Held In Byas Municipality To Promote And Preserve Archaeological Sites

On the occasion of World Heritage Day, a heritage walk was organized within Byas Municipality to promote and preserve local archaeological sites. The walk, held under the slogan “For Heritage Conservation and a Healthy Body,” was organized by the Byas Municipal Academy. According to Devi Bahadur Basnet, coordinator of the Academy’s Art and Culture Department, the event aimed to study and observe ancient sites, some of which are endangered or in ruins, to support their preservation.

The walk started from the Byas Municipality office and passed through landmarks such as the Ward 4 office area, Jaldevi Temple Mosque, Kalika Temple- Tamusar Koibo, reaching the Patan–Parashar–Byas Cave area for site inspection. It concluded at Anshan Chautari in Byas-3 after visiting Deuralinagar’s religious site, as shared by Heritage and Tourism Department coordinator Hari Singh Gurung.

Byas Municipality Mayor and Academy Chancellor Baikuntha Neupane noted that many heritage sites were found in a dilapidated state. He expressed hope that the walk would help identify the current condition of these sites and aid in planning for future tourism and conservation efforts. “Our municipality is rich in cultural and historical heritage, but it has been neglected. These heritages are our identity, and we are now becoming more aware of their importance,” said Mayor Neupane. “Today’s event has inspired us to act. We will promote ongoing related programs and work to link these heritage sites to economic opportunities.”

Among the major sites is the Byas Cave, believed to be the 28th incarnation site of Lord Vedas Vyasa. Other notable locations include Parashar Cave and Tanahun Kalika Temple. Despite their significance, many sites remain under-promoted. Organizers stated that the walk sends a message to all levels of government to take necessary steps for the promotion and preservation of these historical and tourist assets.
