Emergency Bomb Threat Drill Conducted at Gautam Buddha International Airport

Emergency Bomb Threat Drill Conducted at Gautam Buddha International Airport

An emergency mock rescue drill based on a simulated “bomb threat” scenario was conducted on Monday at Gautam Buddha International Airport. The exercise aimed to demonstrate the procedures for safely landing an aircraft and rescuing passengers and crew in the event of a bomb threat.

The drill took place at the airport’s rescue and fire control unit located on the southern side of the premises. Following full preparedness for emergency response, the simulation was carried out involving airport staff, the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, and representatives from concerned emergency response agencies.

During the exercise, various coordinated response teams were deployed to showcase how responsibilities are carried out in real-time situations. Emergency equipment such as fire engines and ambulances were kept in ready condition.

For the drill, a mock scenario was created in which a false report circulated about a bomb being placed on a flight arriving from Malaysia. This triggered an emergency response at the airport in Bhairahawa. In response, the Chief District Officer, security officials, Red Cross personnel, and medical teams were mobilized, with specific roles and responsibilities assigned to each agency.

An old aircraft stationed at the airport was used to demonstrate the rescue operation. Airport staff acted as passengers and were safely evacuated by security personnel. Their physical and mental conditions were assessed, and necessary medical care was provided.

The Nepal Army team was shown disposing of the simulated bomb. According to airport spokesperson Binod Rawat, Gautam Buddha International Airport conducts such emergency drills annually. “Last year, we conducted a full-scale emergency exercise,” he said. “This year, we simulated a partial bomb threat scenario to test our response capabilities.”
