Minister Pandey Stresses Importance of Private Sector Investment in Tourism Development

Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Minister Badri Prasad Pandey emphasized the vital role of private sector investment in the growth and prosperity of Nepal’s tourism sector. Speaking at the 7th Annual General Assembly and 4th Convention of the Tourism Entrepreneur Women Association Nepal (TEWAN) held in Pokhara, the minister highlighted that tourism is flourishing largely due to active participation and investment from private enterprises.

Minister Pandey cited the example of the bungee jump facility in Kushma, Parbat, as a successful case of private sector-driven development. “Before the bungee jump was constructed, no one paid attention to Kushma. Now, with just one adventure structure in place, over a thousand people visit the area daily,” he remarked. “This clearly shows that without private sector leadership, the tourism sector cannot advance.”

Urging the public and government institutions not to view private investors with suspicion, Minister Pandey stated, “We must welcome the private sector with a red carpet. They are key stakeholders in national development. However, this partnership should be built on principles.”

He also stressed the importance of ensuring fairness within the system. “The government must create laws that prevent tax evasion, prohibit labor exploitation by the private sector, and protect consumers from being overcharged,” he added.

Minister Pandey reiterated that tourism is a significant pillar of the national economy and that coordinated efforts are necessary for its development and promotion. He called for strategic branding and marketing of Nepal’s natural and cultural tourism destinations, particularly its Himalayan regions.

“The Himalayas alone are not enough,” the minister said. “We must move forward with sound policy to promote all aspects of our tourism sector.” The TEWAN event was attended by several dignitaries, including members of the Gandaki Provincial Assembly, tourism entrepreneurs, civil society leaders, and journalists.
