Severe Turbulence Forces Emergency Landing in Germany; Storms Cause Regional Damage

Berlin to Milan Flight Diverted to Bavaria After Intense Turbulence

A commercial flight from Berlin to Milan, carrying 179 passengers and six crew members, was forced to make an emergency landing at Memmingen Airport in Bavaria after encountering severe turbulence around 8:30 PM. The turbulence was so intense that the pilot made the unscheduled landing to ensure passenger safety.

As a result of the mid-air turbulence, eight passengers and one crew member were injured. While three individuals required hospitalization in Memmingen, the remaining injured were treated by emergency services and released after outpatient care. Authorities ensured that all passengers underwent medical evaluation as a precaution. Following the emergency landing, the aircraft was not cleared to resume its journey. The airline arranged bus transportation for passengers to Milan, which lies approximately 380 kilometers south of Memmingen.

Storms Batter Southern Germany

Simultaneously, severe weather wreaked havoc across southern Germany, especially in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg. The German Press Agency (dpa) reported that strong winds in the Donaustetten district ripped roofs off several row houses, making them uninhabitable. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident.

Fire officials suspect that a small tornado or waterspout may have caused the damage. The German Weather Service (DWD) has launched an investigation into the incident. Elsewhere in southern Germany, storm-related emergency calls were reported from various towns, with damage largely involving fallen trees and flooded basements. The DWD has issued warnings for further storms in the region, forecasting hail, strong winds, and localized heavy rainfall.
