Nepal Showcased as Premier Travel Destination at New York Networking Event

To enhance Nepal’s visibility in the US travel market, the Consulate General of Nepal in New York, in collaboration with the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) New York Chapter, organized a high-profile Interaction and Networking Event in New York. The event aimed to promote Nepal’s tourism offerings and attract American travelers by highlighting the country’s natural beauty, cultural richness, and emerging tourism experiences.

Held in a warm and interactive setting, the event brought together key stakeholders from the travel and tourism industry, entrepreneurs, media personalities, and friends of Nepal, who explored the possibilities of increased tourism collaboration and exchange between the two nations.

Highlighting Nepal’s Tourism Potential

Speaking at the event, Consul General Mr. Dadhiram Bhandari opened the program by welcoming the participants and emphasizing the importance of the US market for Nepal’s tourism growth. He acknowledged the increasing role of American visitors in Nepal’s tourism industry and noted that the US consistently ranks among the top source countries for international tourists to Nepal.

Mr. Bhandari elaborated on how Nepal’s diverse landscape, from the towering Himalayas to serene jungles, and its living cultural heritage make it a unique destination for discerning travelers. “It is time,” he said, “to intensify our branding efforts and showcase Nepal as a high-value destination that offers authentic, sustainable, and transformative travel experiences.” He also praised the long-stay and high-spend nature of US tourists, highlighting their contribution to the Nepali tourism economy.

Nepal’s Vision for Sustainable Tourism

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Mr. Lok Bahadur Thapa, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, expressed the Government of Nepal’s strong commitment to positioning tourism as a pivotal pillar of the country’s economic development. He emphasized the need for a holistic and inclusive tourism strategy that not only attracts more visitors but also ensures sustainability, equity, and local empowerment.

“Tourism in Nepal is not just about sightseeing,” Ambassador Thapa remarked. “It is about creating opportunities for communities, preserving our cultural treasures, and promoting responsible engagement with our environment.” He called on attendees to join hands with Nepal’s diplomatic and tourism agencies to spread the message that Nepal is open, safe, and ready to welcome the world.

American Voices for Nepal

One of the key highlights of the evening was a presentation by Ms. Erin Levi, an acclaimed travel writer and producer, who shared her personal experiences of traveling in Nepal. Known for her insightful travel narratives, Ms. Levi described Nepal as one of the safest and most welcoming destinations for travelers of all ages and backgrounds.

She spotlighted the Burhan Wilderness Camp in Bardia National Park, which was featured in TIME Magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places of 2024.” Her vivid storytelling transported the audience to the jungles of Nepal, offering a glimpse into the country’s hidden gems beyond the usual trekking trails. Her message was clear: “Nepal is more than mountains, it’s a complete experience of nature, culture, and humanity.”

Tea Tourism: A New Way to Experience Nepal

Another inspiring segment of the program was delivered by Mr. Nishchal Banskota, founder of the Nepal Tea Collective. As a second-generation entrepreneur promoting Nepali tea in the US, Mr. Banskota spoke passionately about the concept of Immersive Tea Tourism.

He described how his organization organizes curated tours, primarily for American visitors, to tea estates in eastern Nepal. These tours allow travelers to engage directly with local farmers, understand the tea-making process, and contribute to local economies. “Through tea,” he said, “we’re creating a deeper, more meaningful connection between the American public and Nepal.”

Strengthening Partnerships with PATA

Ms. Elizabeth Chin, Executive Director of PATA New York Chapter, delivered a strong message of support and collaboration. She emphasized the role that joint initiatives and ongoing promotional efforts play in enhancing Nepal’s presence in competitive markets like the US.

“Our team is fully committed to helping position Nepal as a must-visit destination,” said Ms. Chin. “With the right partnerships, we can highlight Nepal’s unique offerings and build confidence among US travelers.” Members of her team also echoed the call to promote Nepal and offered their expertise and support in media outreach, campaign execution, and information sharing.

Visual Storytelling and Cultural Touch

The event featured a visual presentation prepared by the Consulate using promotional materials provided by the NTB. The presentation included breathtaking visuals of Nepal’s landscapes, festivals, heritage sites, and wildlife, capturing the imagination of the attendees.

Mr. Bhandari noted that US visitors tend to spend more and stay longer in Nepal, making them a valuable demographic to target. He stressed the importance of continued promotion, regular engagement, and strategic marketing to boost Nepal’s image and draw more travelers from the US.

A Platform for Engagement

Following the presentations, participants engaged in open discussions on how to better market Nepal’s travel potential in the American landscape. They recommended regular promotional events, strategic collaborations with US travel media, and destination-specific campaigns to attract targeted demographics such as adventure travelers, wellness seekers, and cultural enthusiasts.

Over fifty participants representing the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries, Nepali entrepreneurs in the US, and media professionals took part in the event. Attendees praised the event as a timely and meaningful effort to connect Nepal with the global travel community.

A Taste of Nepal

To complement the formal proceedings, the Consulate served authentic Nepali cuisine and offered gift items featuring Nepali products to all participants. This not only delighted the guests but also introduced them to Nepal’s rich culinary and artisanal heritage, reinforcing the country’s identity as a land of vibrant culture and hospitality.

Looking Ahead

As Nepal continues to recover from the global travel downturn, such initiatives serve as crucial platforms to rejuvenate interest, attract investment, and increase footfall from key source markets like the United States. The event in New York was not only a promotional success but also a meaningful reminder of the growing bond between Nepal and the US through tourism, culture, and collaboration. The Consulate General and its partners pledged to maintain this momentum with ongoing efforts and future events, ensuring that Nepal remains on the radar of US travelers for years to come.
