Monsoon System Intensifies Across Nepal: Heavy Rainfall and Weather Alerts Issued

Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal. Picture before the earthquake.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has issued a detailed weather update warning of intensified monsoon conditions across the country. As monsoon winds dominate the national weather system, significant rainfall, thunder, lightning, and strong winds are expected in several provinces.

Monsoon Trough Near Average Position, Causing Unstable Weather

The DHM stated that the monsoon’s low-pressure line is currently located near the average position in western Nepal and slightly to the north of the average location in the east. This alignment is contributing to an increase in precipitation activity across the country. With the monsoon trough activating both eastern and western corridors, many regions are experiencing persistent cloud cover and intermittent showers.

Cloudy Skies and Widespread Showers Expected This Afternoon

As of this afternoon, the weather is predicted to remain generally cloudy nationwide. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in many areas of Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces. Scattered showers may also affect Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces. According to DHM’s forecast, heavy rain is particularly likely in some places of Koshi Province, with additional heavy showers possible in one or two locations across Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini.

Snowfall Predicted in Mountainous Regions

The monsoon system is expected to extend its influence into the high hills and Himalayan regions. Light to moderate snowfall may occur in isolated areas of these elevated zones. This is typical during active monsoon phases when moisture-laden air masses interact with cooler high-altitude zones.

Strong Winds Forecast in Terai Regions

In addition to rain and lightning, strong winds are likely in the Terai areas of Koshi and some regions of Madhes Province. The DHM cautioned residents, particularly in flat and open terrain, to stay alert for gusty conditions that can cause disruptions in transport, power lines, and agriculture.

Night Forecast: More Rain Likely in Hilly Areas

Tonight, partial to generally cloudy skies are expected to prevail across the country. There is a forecast of light to moderate rain, thunder, and lightning in several hilly regions of Koshi, Madhes, and Sudurpashchim provinces. Other provinces may also experience scattered rain due to the active monsoon trough. The DHM’s 6:00 am bulletin emphasized that Koshi, Madhes, and Sudurpashchim provinces may witness heavy rainfall at one or two locations during the night as well.

Continued Risk of Rain and Snow in Elevated Terrain

The weather department has further indicated that light to moderate rainfall and even snowfall might continue in some high hills and Himalayan areas throughout the evening and into the night. With saturated soil and increased moisture content, these areas remain at elevated risk of geo-hazards.

Flood and Landslide Alerts Issued for Vulnerable Areas

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a public advisory warning of potential natural hazards due to the forecasted rainfall. The combination of sustained downpour and terrain instability significantly raises the risk of:

  • Floods in low-lying areas and riverside settlements
  • Landslides in hilly and mountainous districts
  • River overflows due to increased discharge in major river systems

Urban dwellers, especially in the Terai belt, and residents living near riverbanks and landslide-prone slopes have been advised to adopt all necessary safety precautions. The department has urged local governments and disaster management bodies to remain on high alert and prepare for emergency responses if needed.

Authorities Urge Public to Stay Informed and Cautious

As weather conditions evolve rapidly during the monsoon, the DHM recommends the public to stay updated through regular bulletins. People are advised to avoid travel in vulnerable areas during heavy rains and to remain cautious around rivers, steep slopes, and construction zones. Farmers, trekkers, and travelers heading to high-altitude regions should check forecasts before planning their movements.

Nation Braces for Heightened Monsoon Activity

With the monsoon system intensifying and unstable weather patterns prevailing, Nepal faces increased hydro-meteorological risks in the coming days. From heavy rains and snowfall in the hills to strong winds and flood threats in the lowlands, the DHM’s forecast paints a picture of heightened caution. Both individuals and authorities are urged to take proactive safety measures to mitigate potential damage and loss. As the situation develops, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology will continue to monitor atmospheric changes and provide timely updates to ensure public safety and awareness.
