Monsoon Turns Dhorpatan into a Floral Wonderland

During the monsoon season, while most parts of Nepal see a lull in tourist activity, Dhorpatan in Baglung district tells a different story. The region has transformed into a vibrant tourist hub, thanks to its peaceful environment, cool climate, and most notably, its blanket of multicolored wildflowers. The breathtaking views, dynamic weather patterns, and the gentle breeze further enhance the charm of this highland paradise.

A Burst of Color in the Rain

Stretching across eight kilometers, the Dhorpatan valley is currently painted in a spectrum of natural hues. With a variety of wildflowers blooming across its fields and hillsides, the area appears like a natural canvas. The monsoon, which usually dampens travel plans in other parts of Nepal, has added an extraordinary touch to Dhorpatan, turning it into a unique destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Flowers Lure Visitors Despite Rough Roads

According to Milan Gharti, operator of a local community homestay, Dhorpatan remains busy with visitors even during the monsoon months of Asar to Bhadra. He explains, “Though the roads to Dhorpatan become challenging during this season, the mesmerizing landscapes more than compensate for the bumpy ride. In recent weeks, due to improved weather, we’ve had so many trekkers arriving that we had to refer some to nearby hotels because our homestay was fully booked.”

He emphasizes that the valley’s primary attraction is the rich variety of flowers. Those capable of trekking ascend to Bukipatan, located at an elevation above 4,000 meters. Meanwhile, those who prefer not to trek enjoy horse safaris among the blooming meadows of the valley.

Tourism Boom Inspires Locals

The increase in visitors has also brought joy to local hoteliers, homestay owners, and horse tour operators. Gharti mentions that his 25-bed capacity homestay remains occupied even in this typically low tourist season. Tourists from Pokhara, Butwal, and Kathmandu are among the many who have made their way to Dhorpatan this year.

One such visitor, Anil Rajbanshi from Kathmandu, shared his experience: “The scenic beauty of the Kanchan Uttarganga river, the flat grasslands, and the colorful wildflowers, along with the sight of grazing horses, was truly mesmerizing.” He added that the valley’s flowers, ranging in shades of red, white, yellow, and pink, have a magnetic appeal for nature enthusiasts.

Rajbanshi, who even trekked to Bukipatan in a single day, claimed, “Words cannot fully capture Dhorpatan’s beauty. If the nearly 30 km road from Burtibang to Dhorpatan were properly developed, the number of tourists would skyrocket. The view makes the difficult journey worthwhile.”

Social Media Hype Driving Visits

Platforms like TikTok have played a vital role in promoting Dhorpatan. Many short videos showcasing the stunning views of Dhorpatan and Bukipatan, filled with flower-laden meadows and herds of sheep—have gone viral, attracting a new wave of travelers. Rajbanshi said he was so enchanted by these visuals that he took a week-long leave and traveled to Dhorpatan with his wife from Kathmandu.

“In Bukipatan, we saw hundreds of tourists in just one day. The trail has small wooden bridges and rest shelters, making the trek a bit easier. Despite it being monsoon, there was no shortage of fellow trekkers,” he added.

Gateway to Bukipatan and Jaljala

Dhorpatan serves as a base to reach destinations like Bukipatan and Jaljala, where travelers can also enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges. The valley is known for its alpine wildflowers collectively referred to as “Buki” by locals. These flowers, seen in full bloom during monsoon, make the landscape appear almost surreal, especially when horses, cows, and sheep are seen grazing among them.

Locals believe that the easier road access, availability of homestays and hotels, and improved mobile connectivity have all contributed to Dhorpatan’s rising popularity. Tourists now find it easier than ever to explore this hidden gem in western Nepal.

A Monsoon Destination Like No Other

Unlike other regions where tourism fades during monsoon, Dhorpatan is proving to be a delightful exception. The natural allure of its colorful flowers, tranquil valley, and rustic charm are drawing hundreds of visitors each week. With further investment in infrastructure, especially road improvements, Dhorpatan could soon emerge as one of Nepal’s most sought-after eco-tourism spots, even in the rainy season.
