The scenic region of Chakhewa Bhanjyang, located in Tyamkemaiyum Rural Municipality of Bhojpur, is rapidly developing into a welcoming and accessible destination for tourists. Renowned for its natural beauty, Chakhewa has gained renewed attention following improvements in local infrastructure, particularly road access, making it easier for travelers to reach and explore this hidden gem of eastern Nepal.
Strategic Location and Accessibility Driving Tourism
Situated at an elevation of 2,351 meters above sea level, Chakhewa Bhanjyang lies approximately 40 kilometers from Bhojpur district headquarters. With the extension of blacktopped roads, visitors can now travel comfortably to the area, enjoying both the journey and the destination. The site, surrounded by rolling hills, offers sweeping vistas, rich biodiversity, and a tranquil environment ideal for relaxation and cultural exploration.
Travelers often visit the region not just for sightseeing but also to savor local delicacies and immerse themselves in the cultural essence of the region. Its strategic location along the Mid-Hill Highway and as a central point of the Mundhum Trail (a trekking route deeply rooted in Kirat culture), adds to its significance. This dual positioning has increased both local and external interest in the site.
Local Government’s Vision for Cultural and Ecotourism Development
According to Rural Municipality Chairperson Saroj Basnet, efforts are being made to transform Chakhewa into a comprehensive cultural, historical, and ecological tourism hub. Emphasizing the village’s rich traditions and values, Basnet highlighted plans to align tourism development with the promotion of local customs and lifestyles.
“Chakhewa is one of our municipality’s most important tourism assets,” Chairperson Basnet stated. “We are committed to developing it into a well-established tourist destination in eastern Nepal that not only offers natural beauty but also preserves and promotes our cultural heritage and traditional values.”
As part of this long-term vision, the local government plans to construct a grand cultural museum, a public park, and a center for cultural studies in the area. An estimated budget of around NPR 30 million from the federal government has been allocated, and land acquisition for these projects is currently underway. Chairperson Basnet also reiterated the natural allure of the area, stating, “The landscape itself is mesmerizing. We are now focusing on enhancing infrastructure while safeguarding our unique identity.”
Promoting the Mundhum Trail and Festival Tourism
Further reinforcing the importance of Chakhewa Bhanjyang in Nepal’s tourism map is its link to the Mundhum Trail, a culturally significant trekking route that follows the ancient spiritual paths of the Kirati people. This trail has gained popularity in recent years for offering a unique combination of trekking and cultural experiences, and Chakhewa serves as a critical waypoint along this route.
Vice-Chairperson Ramadevi Rai shared that several fairs and festivals are organized throughout the year to promote Chakhewa and the broader Mundhum trail. These events not only celebrate local culture but also attract domestic and foreign visitors who are curious about the indigenous traditions and lifestyle of the region. Rai emphasized that the rural municipality is working diligently to link tourism with the local economy, especially through the integration of agriculture and cultural tourism.
“The rural municipality is focused on economic empowerment through agriculture and tourism,” she said. “We are promoting the slogan ‘Agriculture, Tourism, and Cultural Infrastructure: The Foundation of Tyamkemaiyum’s Development’ and are moving ahead with planned development accordingly.”
Sustainable Development and Community Engagement
The local government is taking a community-centered approach in developing Chakhewa as a tourist destination. By involving local residents in the hospitality and tourism sectors, they aim to create sustainable economic opportunities while preventing cultural dilution or environmental degradation.
Residents are being encouraged to participate in homestay programs, cultural exhibitions, and small-scale hospitality businesses. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to preserve natural resources, religious sites, and traditional architectural elements that make Chakhewa unique.
The integration of tourism with local agriculture, such as the promotion of organic produce, traditional cuisines, and agro-tourism initiatives, is another strategic area being explored to enhance visitor experience and provide added value to the community.
Chakhewa’s Potential as Eastern Nepal’s Signature Destination
With its blend of natural beauty, spiritual significance, and cultural richness, Chakhewa Bhanjyang is poised to become one of eastern Nepal’s most notable tourism destinations. The ongoing infrastructure development, the municipality’s clear vision, and community involvement are all contributing to this transformation.
Moreover, its position on the border of Bhojpur and Khotang districts enhances its accessibility and appeal, making it a convenient stopover or base for broader exploration of eastern Nepal’s hidden wonders.
Chakhewa Bhanjyang is fast becoming a model for sustainable rural tourism in Nepal. With focused planning, strong leadership, and active community participation, Tyamkemaiyum Rural Municipality is unlocking the potential of this beautiful location. As the physical and cultural infrastructure continues to improve, Chakhewa is set to emerge not only as a tourism hub but also as a symbol of local pride and regional development. The days ahead look promising for Chakhewa, as it journeys toward becoming a signature destination in Nepal’s vibrant tourism landscape.
