The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), in collaboration with the Nepal Association for Software and IT Services Companies (NAS-IT), successfully organized a workshop on Friday titled “Bridging Tourism and IT: Towards a Common Understanding”. Held at the NTB auditorium, the event aimed to strengthen dialogue between the tourism and information technology sectors, identify shared opportunities, assess sector-specific challenges, and lay the foundation for long-term collaboration.

Tourism Recovery Needs Digital Boost
Inaugurating the event, NTB Chief Executive Officer Deepak Raj Joshi noted that while Nepal’s tourism sector has been gradually recovering from the severe impacts of COVID-19, it still remains below pre-pandemic levels.
“We have made efforts to generate demand within Nepal, but now it is imperative to work with the IT sector for impactful promotion in the global market,” Joshi said. “Through digital integration, Nepal’s travel can be elevated to compete internationally.”
Joshi emphasized that digital tools are no longer optional but essential for expanding reach, improving tourist experiences, and boosting competitiveness. He pointed out that post-pandemic travelers are increasingly relying on online platforms for planning, booking, and reviewing destinations, making a tech-driven approach vital for Nepal.
Showcasing NTB’s Digital Achievements
Welcoming the participants, NTB Senior Manager Archana KC highlighted the achievements the board has made through the integration of IT solutions in recent years. She underscored the importance of leveraging technology not only for marketing but also for data-driven policy-making, destination management, and service enhancement.
KC shared examples of NTB’s recent initiatives, including the adoption of digital marketing campaigns targeting key international markets, and partnerships with online travel agencies to improve Nepal’s visibility.

Presentations on Digital Horizons
One of the key highlights of the workshop was the presentation by NTB Senior Officer Sudhan Subedi on “Digital Horizon: Elevating Nepal Tourism”. Subedi outlined technology-based solutions for tourism promotion, product diversification, and enhancing visitor experiences.
He stressed the need for innovative approaches such as immersive virtual tours, AI-powered travel recommendations, and personalized itineraries to cater to the evolving preferences of global travelers. Subedi also discussed the potential of integrating payment gateways, online booking platforms, and destination apps to make travel planning seamless for both domestic and international tourists.

NAS-IT Vice President Gaurav Pandey also delivered an engaging presentation focusing on strengthening Nepal’s tourism value chain through the nation’s IT capabilities.
“The current state of tourism is still below pre-COVID levels,” Pandey said. “One of the main challenges is the lack of sufficient promotion for market expansion. However, by utilizing Nepal’s growing pool of IT talent, we can develop smart solutions for marketing, booking, and customer engagement.”

Collaborative Ideas from Participants
The workshop provided a platform for industry stakeholders to share perspectives on potential collaboration areas. Participants suggested joint efforts in digital marketing campaigns, smart travel solutions, online booking platform development, and data analytics for destination management.
Ideas such as creating a centralized tourism database, integrating geolocation-based services for tourists, and developing multilingual tourism apps were also discussed. Several participants emphasized the importance of training tourism entrepreneurs in digital literacy to ensure that small and medium businesses can also benefit from technological advances.
Commitment to a Long-Term Plan
According to NTB, the workshop concluded with a shared commitment to prepare a long-term action plan focusing on tourism digitalization. This plan will include strategic investments in digital infrastructure, capacity building, and the creation of a unified tourism-IT ecosystem to ensure consistent collaboration between the two sectors.
NTB officials stated that such initiatives are crucial for keeping pace with global trends, where tourism competitiveness is increasingly linked to the effective use of technology. They also highlighted that integrating IT solutions will allow Nepal to tap into niche markets such as adventure, wellness and cultural tourism with greater precision.

A Step Towards Digital Transformation
The NTB described this initiative as part of a broader long-term strategic move to modernize and enhance accessibility in Nepal’s tourism sector through digital transformation.
By merging the creative potential of this sector with the technological expertise of IT companies, the board believes Nepal can position itself as an attractive and tech-savvy destination for global travelers.
“Tourism is not just about beautiful landscapes, it is about providing memorable and hassle-free experiences,” NTB officials noted. “With the right digital tools, we can tell Nepal’s story more effectively and invite the world to experience it firsthand.”
The collaboration between NTB and NAS-IT, they added, will pave the way for a future where technology becomes an integral part of every stage of a traveler’s journey, from the moment they discover Nepal to the time they share their experiences online.
