The outcome underscores the growing representation of the Sherpa community in NMA’s leadership, a group deeply connected to Nepal’s mountaineering heritage and integral to the success of countless climbing expeditions over the years.
Significance of the Book Holder Member Role
In the NMA’s governance structure, Book Holder Members play an important role in decision-making, policy formulation, and safeguarding the interests of the association’s stakeholders. They act as vital links between the grassroots mountaineering community and the leadership, ensuring that climbers, guides, and other mountain workers have a strong voice in shaping the future of Nepal’s mountaineering industry.
The election of four new members is expected to inject fresh perspectives and renewed energy into the NMA’s executive body, particularly in addressing emerging challenges such as sustainable tourism, mountain safety, and the preservation of Nepal’s high-altitude environments.
Sherpa Leadership in the Spotlight
This year’s election results also highlight the increasing leadership presence of Sherpa candidates within the NMA. Given their deep-rooted cultural ties to the Himalayas and first-hand experience in guiding expeditions, Sherpa representatives bring a wealth of practical knowledge to policy discussions.
The newly elected members are anticipated to focus on initiatives that strengthen the welfare of mountain workers, enhance training standards for climbers and guides, and promote Nepal as a premier destination for responsible and safe adventure tourism.
NMA’s Broader Role in Nepal’s Mountaineering Sector
The Nepal Mountaineering Association, established in 1973, plays a central role in promoting mountaineering activities, regulating climbing permits for peaks below 6,500 meters, and representing Nepal’s interests in international mountaineering forums. Over the decades, the NMA has worked to improve mountain safety, conduct clean-up campaigns, and advocate for the protection of fragile mountain ecosystems.
With the election of new Book Holder Members, the association now looks forward to a phase of renewed leadership and policy innovation. These members will be directly involved in advancing the NMA’s strategic goals, particularly at a time when Nepal’s tourism and mountaineering industries are rebounding from recent global disruptions.

Looking Ahead: Expectations from the New Team
Following the official declaration of results, the NMA leadership expressed confidence that the newly elected Book Holder Members will play a vital role in advancing the association’s mission. They are expected to focus on strengthening the representation of mountain communities in policy-making, enhancing safety protocols and training programs for climbers, and promoting sustainable tourism practices that balance economic growth with environmental conservation.
Additionally, efforts will be made to expand the global visibility of Nepal’s mountaineering potential, positioning the country as a leading destination for responsible and world-class adventure tourism. For their part, the newly elected members have pledged to work collaboratively with fellow executives, government authorities, and international partners to advance the interests of Nepal’s mountaineers and preserve the legacy of the Himalayas.
