After a hiatus of nearly four months, Nepal Airlines has resumed its scheduled flights to Rara Airport in Mugu, bringing much-needed relief to local residents and tourists. The national flag carrier of Nepal, owned by the Government of Nepal, operated its first flight today, marking the return of connectivity to this remote yet important destination.
Flights Resume After Four-Month Break
According to Navin Kumar Bista, Head of Nepal Airlines at Rara Airport, the airline had been operating three flights a week to Rara until last April. However, the flights were abruptly halted due to a range of operational and logistical challenges. The suspension of services created difficulties for both local residents and visitors, especially as Rara Lake, Nepal’s largest and one of the most scenic lakes, remains a prime tourist attraction drawing both domestic and international travelers.
Today’s resumption has been widely welcomed. Locals expressed their gratitude, highlighting how essential air connectivity is for a remote district like Mugu, where road access remains difficult and time-consuming.

Locals and Tourists Relieved
The halt in flights over the past four months had left many residents and travelers struggling to reach their destinations. Tourists who wanted to visit Rara Lake, as well as patients seeking urgent medical treatment in Nepalgunj and other cities, were especially affected.
Passenger Sumitra Rawal, who was traveling to Nepalgunj for treatment, shared her relief after boarding the resumed service: “If regular flights are maintained, people in remote regions like ours will truly find some relief,” she said.
For many residents of Mugu, flights are not just a matter of convenience but often a lifeline. Access to healthcare, education, trade, and tourism is heavily dependent on these scheduled services.
Airlines Operating at Rara
Currently, Rara Airport is served by several domestic airlines. Alongside Nepal Airlines, carriers such as Summit Air, Tara Air, and Sita Air also operate flights to and from the region. However, irregularities in schedules and frequent cancellations have long been a challenge for passengers.
Local stakeholders believe that with multiple airlines involved, consistent coordination and operational management are necessary to ensure that flights run regularly. Nepal Airlines’ re-entry into service at Rara is seen as a positive step toward stabilizing air connectivity.
Commitment to Regular Flights
Despite the challenges that had led to the suspension of flights earlier, officials at Nepal Airlines have assured that they are working to maintain regular schedules moving forward.
Bista emphasized that efforts are underway to make flights more reliable: “Although there were reasons behind the irregular flights in the past, we are committed to taking initiatives on our side to ensure more regular services from now on,” he said. The assurance has given hope to both residents and entrepreneurs who depend on tourism in Mugu.
Importance of Rara for Tourism
Rara Lake, located within Rara National Park, is one of Nepal’s most celebrated natural treasures. Known as the “Queen of Lakes,” it is the country’s largest freshwater lake and sits at an altitude of 2,990 meters. Its pristine blue waters, surrounded by pine, spruce, and juniper forests, attract thousands of trekkers and adventure seekers every year.
Air connectivity through Rara Airport is crucial for tourism in the region. Without flights, travelers face arduous road journeys lasting several days, which deters many potential visitors. The suspension of flights had caused visible setbacks for local tourism operators, including hoteliers, guides, and small businesses dependent on the tourist flow. Now, with Nepal Airlines resuming operations, there is renewed optimism that the flow of visitors to Rara will increase during the upcoming tourism season.
Challenges Facing Air Operations
While today’s development is a milestone, experts point out that sustainable operations require addressing broader challenges. Fuel costs, maintenance of small aircraft, and unpredictable weather in the mountainous region often disrupt regular flights. Furthermore, the purchasing power of locals is limited, and high airfare remains an ongoing concern.
Industry observers say that the government and airlines need to collaborate on long-term solutions, such as subsidized fares for remote areas, better infrastructure at regional airports, and incentives for airlines to serve less-profitable but essential routes.

Looking Ahead
For now, the return of Nepal Airlines flights has sparked hope among the people of Mugu. It signifies more than just a plane taking off; it is about access to healthcare, education, commerce, and the outside world for thousands of residents.
The resumption also holds symbolic importance for the revival of tourism around Rara Lake. If flights are made consistent, local entrepreneurs believe the region could see increased footfall from both Nepali and international tourists, strengthening the local economy.
With Summit Air, Tara Air, Sita Air, and now Nepal Airlines all contributing, the future of Rara’s connectivity depends on how consistently these services are maintained. The people of Mugu, who endured four months of isolation, now wait to see if today’s development will mark the beginning of reliable and sustained connectivity to the rest of Nepal.
