Budhanilkantha Municipality Moves to List Iconic Temple as UNESCO World Heritage Site

Budhanilkantha Municipality has intensified efforts to enlist the culturally significant and spiritually revered Budhanilkantha Temple in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Mayor Mitharam Adhikari announced that formal processes have already begun with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Speaking at the municipality’s 12th Establishment Day celebration, he stated that discussions with the Government of Nepal and other concerned authorities are underway to advance the proposal. The municipality is also working proactively to reclaim public lands that were previously encroached upon.

Focus on Education, Health, Infrastructure, and Sports By Budhanilkantha

Mayor Adhikari emphasized that the municipality has prioritized education, health, infrastructure development, and sports as key sectors for progress. The education budget has been increased to Rs 13 crore, and students up to grade 10 are being provided with mid-day meals. Under its incentive program, the municipality rewards community schools that secure a 4 GPA with Rs 5 lakh and offers a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh to high-achieving students. In the health sector, the municipal hospital has been providing daily treatment services to more than 300 patients, reflecting its growing role in accessible local healthcare.

Provincial Minister and Deputy Mayor Praise Municipal Progress

Addressing the ceremony, Bagmati Province’s Minister for Labour, Employment, and Transport, Jaya Ram Thapa, commended Budhanilkantha Municipality for its effective work in development, good governance, and service delivery. Deputy Mayor Anita Lama also highlighted the strong performance of the municipal workforce, noting that efforts are being made to make public services more result-oriented for residents.
