The Greek island of Chios is poised to surpass 150,000 Turkish tourist arrivals by the end of 2025, marking one of its strongest years yet. The projection was shared by Chios Tourism Board President Kostas Moundros during the island’s official participation at the Travel Turkey Izmir international tourism exhibition, held from 2–5 December 2025.
Moundros described the Turkish market as one of the island’s most “stable and dynamic pillars,” noting its consistent year-on-year growth and untapped potential for further expansion. “What we are witnessing is nothing short of remarkable. Turkish arrivals once stood at fewer than 10,000 in 2008, a number that has now multiplied more than fifteen-fold. This transformation clearly reflects the real momentum of that place,” he told.
From 10,000 to 150,000: A Dramatic Rise in Cross-Border Tourism
The Tourism Board president emphasized that the rapid rise in Turkish visitors has fundamentally reshaped the island’s tourism landscape. The close proximity between Chios and Turkey, combined with cultural familiarity, improved maritime connections, and growing demand for short leisure breaks, has strengthened the island’s appeal among Turkish travellers. With current trends showing no signs of slowing, Moundros noted that the 150,000 visitor milestone could soon be surpassed, especially as new strategic initiatives take shape.
Airport Modernisation to Unlock New International Markets
One of the most significant developments boosting Chios’ long-term tourism prospects is the upcoming modernisation of Chios Airport. Moundros said the upgrade will allow the island to expand into new international markets, supporting diversification and reducing dependence on a limited number of source countries. “The airport upgrade will give the wings it needs to attract new visitor groups, offering valuable diversification and strengthening year-round tourism demand,” he stated.
Strong Presence at Travel Turkey Izmir Exhibition
Chios’ active participation in the Travel Turkey Izmir exhibition underscores its commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and capturing a larger share of the booming Turkish outbound market. The island’s delegation, jointly organized by the Chios Chamber of Commerce and the Municipality of Chios, highlighted the destination’s rich history, cultural depth, and unique visitor experiences that continue to attract Turkish travellers seeking authentic, nearby escapes.
The exhibition, considered one of the most influential professional tourism events in the region, brings together tour operators, travel agencies, tourism officials, and industry decision-makers seeking stable, high-quality partnerships. Chios’ presence aims to capitalize on this platform to strengthen its brand and expand its network of reliable collaborators.
A New Phase of Tourism Maturity
Industry representatives accompanying the Chios delegation said the professional meetings scheduled in Izmir are expected to produce immediate new agreements, reinforcing the island’s outward-facing strategy. These developments signal that Chios is entering a new phase of tourism maturity, driven largely by the steady rise of the Turkish market.
“The momentum is real, and the Turkish market is proof of it. Chios is no longer an emerging destination, it is now a fully confident and competitive tourism hub,” Moundros said. With the island set to reach a historic record in arrivals and major infrastructure upgrades on the way, Chios appears well-positioned to further enhance its identity as a leading regional destination while strengthening long-term bilateral tourism ties with Turkey.
