Jyamchang Bhote Conquers Antarctica’s Vinson Massif for a Historic 15th Summit

Renowned Nepali mountaineer and International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA) certified guide Jyamchang Bhote has once again inscribed his name in global mountaineering history by successfully summiting Vinson Massif, Antarctica’s highest peak, for a record 15th time.

Bhote reached the summit on January 6, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most accomplished Himalayan and polar region climbers in the world. His latest ascent places him among a rare group of elite mountaineers who hold the highest number of summits on the frozen continent’s tallest mountain, standing at 4,892 meters.

“I reached the summit of Mt. Vinson on January 6,” Jyamchang Bhote confirmed. “This mountain has become almost like a second home to me, and each ascent reminds me of the responsibility we carry to protect fragile polar ecosystems.”

An Antarctic Specialist with Rare Expertise

Beyond his remarkable record on Vinson Massif, Jyamchang Bhote is also widely respected for his deep expertise in Antarctic expeditions. He has guided numerous international clients to the Emperor Penguin Colony at Gould Bay and the geographic South Pole, destinations known for their extreme remoteness and challenging logistics.

“Very few Nepali guides have had the opportunity to guide expeditions to the Emperor Penguin Colony,” Bhote noted. The Gould Bay camp provides climbers and wildlife enthusiasts a rare chance to observe emperor penguins in their natural habitat from a well-supported yet environmentally sensitive base camp. His work in Antarctica has not only elevated Nepal’s global guiding reputation but also opened new frontiers for Nepali professionals in polar tourism.

A Record Holder on Mount Everest

A native of Sankhuwasabha district, Bhote is also a veteran of Mount Everest, having summited the world’s highest peak nine times. During one of his most recent Everest climbs, he carried and planted an environmentally themed flag at the summit, promoting a global message of climate action, forest conservation, and sustainable environmental practices.

Through this symbolic act, Bhote drew international attention to the growing impact of climate change on the Himalayas and polar regions alike, emphasizing the shared vulnerability of the world’s high-altitude and cold-region ecosystems.

Shaping the Next Generation of Mountain Guides

In addition to his climbing accomplishments, Bhote is a highly respected instructor and mentor. As a senior instructor with the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and the Nepal Mountaineering Instructor Association (NMIA), he plays a critical role in shaping the future of Nepal’s mountaineering profession.

He leads a wide range of training programs, from introductory rock-climbing courses for schoolchildren to advanced technical and safety training for professional mountain guides. His teaching efforts have helped elevate safety standards and professional competencies across Nepal’s climbing community.

Leadership Across Mountaineering Institutions

Bhote’s contributions also extend into leadership and policy development within Nepal’s mountaineering sector. He has served as Vice President of the Himalaya Bhote Society, Treasurer of the Sankhuwasabha Everest Climbers Association Nepal (SECAN), and as a board member of NMIA.

Additionally, he is a life member of the US Nepal Climbers Association, a former executive board member of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), a general member of the NMA, and an associate member of the Everest Summiteers Association, positions that reflect his long-standing commitment to strengthening Nepal’s mountaineering institutions.

A Legacy of Excellence and Environmental Advocacy

With his historic 15th ascent of Vinson Massif, Jyamchang Bhote continues to inspire climbers across the world. His dual role as an elite mountaineer and environmental advocate has made him one of Nepal’s most respected figures in international mountaineering circles.

As he continues to lead expeditions in both the Himalayas and Antarctica, Bhote remains a symbol of Nepal’s global leadership in high-altitude and polar guiding, demonstrating that Nepali climbers are not only conquering the world’s highest peaks but also championing the protection of the planet’s most fragile environments.
