By Women, For Women: A Transformative Expedition to Nepal’s Majestic Heights

Let me explain one word here- Expedition. In Nepal, an expedition is often assumed to be a mountaineering journey. However, the literal meaning of Expedition is a journey undertaken for a specific purpose. In this sense, a woman’s expedition is a journey defined by women, for women, and to women.

By Women, For Women and To Women

Having led a women’s expedition for a year, the experience has been deeply enriching. It is Intrepid Travel Nepal, a 12-day journey where we visit, support women-led and women-based businesses and initiatives.

One such experience is Dolma Sister’s momo-making class, where every momo she folds carries a story of resilience, care, and love. Every ingredient is prepared by women within their community, making the last night dinner at Village’s Café not just delicious but also emotionally fulfilling. As we share the last meal, we also unfold our stories, emotions, and heartfelt farewells.

The journey of a rollercoaster in the mountain trekking trails, fully supported by an all-women crew, a powerful example of sisterhood that women can achieve when they support each other.

Story, Not Stereotypes

The Chhaupadi Tradition, widely practiced in remote areas of Western Nepal, where menstruating women have to isolate themselves for the menstrual period, bleeding both physically and emotionally. It’s their story of belief that failing to do so will bring a curse and misfortune upon their families.

Kumari Tradition, where a young girl child is worshiped and revered as Goddess Taleju – eyes like a deer, skin pure as a cow, and fearless as a lioness. It is believed that she represents divinity, strength, and reverence.

Expedition

Nepal, a country where a young child is worshipped as a Goddess and at the same time, isolated as untouched. Both realities exist because of womanhood.

Culture, Connection

Our journey takes us to Kapan Nunnery to understand the lives of Buddhist Nuns who have devoted their lives to peace, compassion, and philosophical study. Draped in red robes with a yellow shawl symbolizing sacredness and wisdom, they challenge traditional roles through spiritual leadership.

A warm cultural evening where every mother and sister of the Ghandruk Village comes together to perform their traditional music, dances, and songs, showcasing women’s role in preserving the cultural heritage of our country, Nepal.

Perspective, Purpose

Growing up in a family where my presence is valued and respected, regardless of gender, and now leading the women’s expedition has shaped my perspective to celebrate every woman’s story with pride and love.

Leading the women’s expedition as a trip leader has deepened my passion to lead with purpose, to create a journey that celebrates women’s stories, culture, and connection.

The women’s expedition in Nepal is more than a journey; it is a celebration of resilience, culture, and connection. From sharing meals prepared by women in their communities to witnessing centuries-old traditions like Kumari worship and understanding the spiritual dedication of Buddhist nuns, every moment reflects the strength and diversity of womanhood. This expedition demonstrates that when women lead, support, and honour each other, they create spaces for empowerment, storytelling, and lasting impact. It is a reminder that every journey undertaken with purpose can transform not just the traveller, but the communities and lives it touches.
