Centara Hotels & Resorts is redefining luxury tourism in the Maldives with its sustainability-focused initiatives at The Atollia, a resort spanning two islands connected by a bridge. Through renewable energy, waste reduction, water conservation, and ecosystem protection, Centara demonstrates that eco-friendly practices can coexist with high-end hospitality, offering guests a responsible yet luxurious travel experience.
Two Resorts, One Eco-Friendly Vision
The Atollia comprises Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives, launched in November 2024, and Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, opened in April 2025. Both properties have embedded sustainability into their operations, ensuring guests enjoy luxury while minimizing environmental impact.

“Our approach is to provide world-class hospitality that also respects and preserves the Maldives’ delicate ecosystem,” said a spokesperson from Centara Hotels & Resorts. “Sustainability is no longer an option, it is central to the future of tourism.”
Leading with Solar Energy
At the heart of The Atollia’s eco-initiatives is solar power. Photovoltaic panels installed across guest accommodations and operational buildings generated 2.3 million kWh of electricity in 2025, reducing diesel consumption by 645,000 litres and cutting 1.96 kilotons of CO2 emissions.
Given the Maldives’ vulnerability to climate change and rising sea levels, these renewable energy efforts are helping mitigate environmental impact while setting a benchmark for the regional tourism industry.
Innovative Waste Management
Both resorts have implemented robust recycling programs. In the past year, Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives recycled over 5,100 kg of glass and 3,700 kg of plastic, while Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives recycled 10,000 kg of glass and 3,300 kg of plastic. Combined, these initiatives prevented more than 22 tonnes of waste from polluting the environment.
This is particularly significant in the Maldives, where fragile marine ecosystems make waste disposal a critical challenge. Centara’s commitment demonstrates a responsible approach to sustainable tourism.
Conserving Water for the Future
Water scarcity is another pressing issue in the Maldives. The Atollia has implemented an advanced wastewater recycling system, reusing treated water for irrigation. To date, over 15,900 cubic metres of wastewater have been recycled, reducing dependency on fresh water resources and supporting sustainable operations.
These measures ensure the resorts operate within environmental limits while securing water resources for future generations.
Protecting Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems
Centara’s sustainability extends to biodiversity protection. Marine conservation efforts at Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives include attaching 350 coral fragments to reefs to promote regeneration and support marine life.
On land, reforestation projects have been undertaken at both resorts. Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives has planted 380 native trees, while Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives introduced 145 fan palms to boost habitats for local birds and insects. These initiatives aim to preserve the Maldives’ natural beauty for years to come.

Commitment to Global Sustainability Goals
Centara Hotels & Resorts has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Since 2019, the company has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 35%, water consumption by 30%, and waste to landfill by 24.5% across its 42 global properties. Each resort at The Atollia has earned Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification, highlighting Centara’s dedication to responsible tourism.
Securing the Maldives’ Sustainable Future
As one of the most climate-vulnerable regions globally, the Maldives faces growing environmental threats. Centara’s initiatives at The Atollia, including solar power, recycling, water conservation, and ecosystem protection, demonstrate that tourism and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
For travelers seeking eco-conscious luxury, The Atollia offers a unique experience, allowing guests to enjoy world-class hospitality while contributing to a sustainable future. Centara’s commitment ensures the Maldives remains an enchanting destination for both nature and culture enthusiasts.
