Epochal Hotels Secures Port of Airlie in $20.75 Million Acquisition

Epochal Hotels, a leading player in Australia’s tourism sector, has made a landmark acquisition by purchasing the Port of Airlie, including the Cruise Whitsundays Terminal and Marina, for a reported $20.75 million. The move marks a pivotal step in the company’s long-term strategy to foster sustainable tourism in the Whitsunday Islands and across the Great Barrier Reef. By taking ownership of this crucial gateway, Epochal Hotels is reinforcing its role as a custodian of the region’s tourism infrastructure while driving economic growth and development.

A Vital Asset for the Whitsundays

The Port of Airlie acquisition encompasses a 1,400-square-meter terminal building on a 1,893-square-meter freehold site, along with approximately 310 meters of pontoon infrastructure. This positions Epochal Hotels as a central force in the future of Whitsundays tourism. The terminal plays a key role in facilitating connectivity between the mainland and the islands, particularly with Cruise Whitsundays, the largest marine tourism operator in the region.

Under the current lease agreement, Cruise Whitsundays, part of the Journey Beyond Group, will continue operations at the terminal until 2035, with an additional 10-year option. This ensures uninterrupted access for tourists and operators alike, maintaining the region’s vital marine transport services.

The acquisition also includes an 8,119-square-meter seabed lease marina, further boosting the terminal’s capacity to support tourism operations and enhance the visitor experience. By integrating the terminal seamlessly with island destinations, Epochal Hotels is laying the groundwork for a sustainable and high-quality tourism ecosystem in the Whitsundays.

Strengthening Connections with Hook Island

This deal represents Epochal Hotels’ third investment in the Whitsundays, following the purchase of Hook Island in 2022 and the Colonial Palms Motel. These strategic acquisitions demonstrate the company’s ongoing commitment to regional tourism growth and sustainable development. By linking the mainland to the islands, the Port of Airlie acquisition improves accessibility for tourists traveling to the Whitsundays.

Construction of a world-class eco-lodge on Hook Island is slated to begin in May, with an expected opening in 2027. The eco-lodge promises environmentally conscious accommodation options, further reinforcing Epochal Hotels’ dedication to sustainable tourism practices while attracting environmentally minded travelers.

Enhancing the Visitor Experience

Epochal Hotels CEO Glenn Piper highlighted the acquisition’s significance for securing the region’s tourism logistics and connectivity. “This acquisition ensures that tourism services, both on land and at sea, will continue to run smoothly for years to come,” Piper stated, emphasizing the foundation it provides for future developments.

The company plans several upgrades to the Port of Airlie facilities to enhance the visitor journey. Planned improvements include modern waiting lounges, expanded food and beverage offerings showcasing local flavors, and green infrastructure initiatives to promote sustainability. These enhancements will complement future transfers to Hook Island, creating a seamless and memorable tourism experience.

Strategic Focus on Sustainable Tourism

Sustainability lies at the core of Epochal Hotels’ strategy. The company is collaborating closely with Cruise Whitsundays to ensure the terminal remains a hub for responsible tourism. Shaun Cawood, General Manager of Cruise Whitsundays, noted that the partnership aligns with a shared vision for the region’s tourism future. By introducing Hook Island resort transfers and improving terminal infrastructure, Epochal Hotels is creating a tourism model that balances growth with environmental stewardship.

Local Support and Confidence

The acquisition has received strong backing from the Whitsunday Regional Council, reflecting local confidence in the region’s tourism future. Mayor Ry Collins praised the investment, noting its potential to strengthen connectivity, create jobs, and promote sustainable tourism growth, all essential for the community’s long-term prosperity.

This milestone is widely viewed as a vote of confidence in the Whitsundays’ potential as a leading tourism destination. Continued investment in infrastructure and sustainable practices positions the region to attract visitors from around the globe for years to come.
