A serving officer of the Nepal Police has embarked on an ambitious mountaineering mission to scale Mount Makalu, the world’s fifth-highest peak, carrying both the national flag and the institutional flag of Nepal Police.
Sub-Inspector Nandlal Chaudhary, currently stationed at the District Police Office in Sankhuwasabha, has set out for the challenges, marking a significant moment of pride for the organization and the country. Standing at an elevation of 8,485 metres, Mount Makalu is regarded as one of the most technically demanding mountains in the world, requiring advanced climbing skills, endurance, and mental resilience.
Flag Handover Ceremony at Police Headquarters
Before his departure, a formal ceremony was held at the Nepal Police Headquarters in Kathmandu on Monday. During the event, Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki officially handed over the national flag and the Nepal Police flag to Sub-Inspector Chaudhary, extending best wishes for a safe and successful ascent.
The ceremony was attended by senior police officials, including Additional Inspectors General Rajan Adhikari, Siddhi Bikram Shah, and Uma Prasad Chaturvedi, along with Central Police Spokesperson Deputy Inspector General Abi Narayan Kafle. Their presence highlighted institutional support and encouragement for Chaudhary’s expedition.
A Journey of Dedication and Determination
Originally from Shivasatakshi Municipality-7 in Jhapa, Chaudhary began his career in Nepal Police as a constable in 1998. Over the years, he has steadily advanced through the ranks to become a Sub-Inspector, demonstrating dedication and professionalism in his service.
Beyond his policing career, Chaudhary has also built a reputation as an enthusiastic mountaineer. In November 2025, he successfully summited Mera Peak, which stands at 6,476 metres, gaining valuable high-altitude experience ahead of his Makalu expedition.
One of the World’s Toughest Peaks
Mount Makalu, located on the border between Nepal and Tibet, is widely known for its steep pitches, sharp ridges, and challenging climbing routes. Unlike more commercialized peaks, Makalu demands a high level of technical expertise and physical stamina, making it a coveted yet formidable goal for climbers.
Chaudhary’s attempt is not only a personal milestone but also a symbol of national pride, as he carries the flags representing both Nepal and its police force to one of the highest points on Earth.
