Seti–Karnali Mahseer Angling Competition Sets New Adventure Benchmark in Nepal

Mahseer angling has taken center stage in Nepal as the country hosts its first-ever international fishing competition, marking a new milestone in adventure and eco-tourism. Nepal has, for the first time, launched an international angling event aimed at promoting adventure and eco-tourism, with the inauguration of the Seti–Karnali International Mahseer Angling Competition. The event marks a significant step toward diversifying Nepal’s tourism offerings beyond trekking and mountaineering, highlighting the country’s vast potential in freshwater tourism.

Organized by Bogatan-Phudsil Rural Municipality with promotional support from the Nepal Tourism Board, the competition has brought together international and domestic anglers to the far-western region of Nepal. The event is being supported by multiple local governments, including Mohanyal Rural Municipality of Kailali, Thakurbaba Municipality of Bardiya, and Chaukune Rural Municipality of Surkhet, along with provincial stakeholders from Sudurpashchim and Karnali provinces.

A First-of-Its-Kind Initiative in Nepal

The competition, which began on Sunday, is scheduled to run until Chaitra 19, with a key segment of the event involving a river expedition along the Seti River. According to event coordinator Devraj Joshi, the angling journey commenced from Dipayal in Doti and will continue until April 3, offering participants a unique blend of adventure and competition.

The highlight of the event is the prize for the longest Mahseer catch, with a cash award of NPR 25,000, along with a commemorative shield. Organizers believe that such incentives will encourage both participation and global attention toward Nepal’s river-based tourism potential.

International Participation and Competitive Spirit at Seti–Karnali Mahseer Angling

The competition has attracted 25 participants from across the globe, including anglers from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Finland, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, India, and Nepal. The participants have been divided into four groups to ensure a structured and competitive format.

The presence of international anglers underscores the growing global interest in Nepal’s natural resources, particularly its rivers, which are home to the prized Mahseer fish species, considered one of the most sought-after freshwater game fish in the world.

Promoting Water-Based Tourism Potential via Mahseer Angling Competition

Officials believe that the event will play a crucial role in showcasing the untapped potential of water-based tourism in western Nepal. Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Forest, and Environment of Sudurpashchim Province, Dirgha Narayan Koirala, emphasized that such initiatives can open new avenues for eco-tourism and adventure tourism.

He noted that activities like rafting and angling, especially during the winter season, can offer thrilling experiences to tourists while contributing significantly to the local economy. “If developed institutionally and sustainably, such activities can become a strong pillar for economic growth in the Sudurpashchim region,” he stated.

Local Leadership and Economic Aspirations

Chairperson of Bogatan-Phudsil Rural Municipality, Kamal Bahadur Gadshila, said the primary objective behind organizing the competition was to highlight local tourism potential and ensure economic benefits for the community.

“This is the first event of its kind in Nepal, and we believe it will contribute to the promotion of water tourism while positively impacting the local economy,” he said. He also expressed confidence that international participants would help promote the region globally by sharing their experiences in their respective countries.

Boosting Local Economy and Global Visibility

The competition is expected to generate income opportunities for local businesses, including homestays, guides, transport providers, and small enterprises. By drawing international attention, the event also aims to position the Seti–Karnali river corridor as a new destination for niche tourism markets.

Tourism experts say that Nepal’s rivers, which remain relatively underutilized compared to its mountains, hold immense potential for sustainable tourism development. Events like this can serve as a catalyst for long-term investment and infrastructure development in remote regions.
