Bandipur–Keshavtar Homestay Circuit Project Aims to Boost Rural Tourism Development

A new initiative has been launched to connect the historic and cultural town of Bandipur and the religiously significant Byas Municipality through the development of a “Homestay Circuit,” marking a significant step toward promoting integrated rural tourism in the region.

The project, titled the Bandipur–Keshavtar Homestay Circuit, is being developed jointly by Byas Municipality and Bandipur Rural Municipality. It is envisioned as a new model for rural tourism development based on cultural heritage, local production, traditional lifestyles, and environmental sustainability.

Promoting Cultural Heritage and Local Identity

According to local authorities, the circuit aims to promote tourism by utilizing the region’s rich cultural heritage and diverse ethnic traditions. Bandipur, once a thriving trade center, lost its prominence after administrative shifts but has recently re-emerged as a vibrant cultural destination.

Often referred to as the “Queen of Hills,” Bandipur has gradually transformed into an open cultural museum, attracting both domestic and international visitors. Officials believe that the homestay-based tourism model will further strengthen its identity as a heritage tourism hub while offering authentic local experiences.

Rural Tourism Vision for 2026

Following the success of “Visit Bandipur Year 2025,” the local government has announced plans to celebrate 2026 as Rural Tourism Visit Year. The initiative focuses on expanding tourism through natural, social, and cultural assets while developing new destinations using the circuit concept.

Local leaders emphasized that the project represents a long-term vision for sustainable tourism development, aiming to diversify tourist experiences and increase rural income generation.

Structure of the Homestay Circuit

The proposed circuit will cover an estimated 75-kilometer circular route, integrating more than 20 villages and 14 homestay operators. The homestays are operated by diverse ethnic communities, including Gurung, Magar, Newar, Chhetri, Brahmin, and Dalit groups, offering visitors a wide range of cultural experiences.

The circuit also includes several wards of Bandipur Rural Municipality and Ward No. 14 of Byas Municipality. Officials believe that this inclusive structure will help strengthen community participation while enhancing tourism-based income opportunities at the local level.

Multi-Phase Implementation Plan

The project is being implemented in three phases. Under the first phase, tourism experts, cultural researchers, entrepreneurs, and technical teams conducted field studies, site inspections, and awareness programs across homestay villages on March 14 and 15. These activities focused on assessing tourism potential, improving service standards, and preparing local communities for increased visitor engagement.

Promotion Through Tourism Mart and Partnerships

As part of the second phase, the project will be promoted at national and international levels through the Gandaki Province Rural Tourism Mart 2083, scheduled for April 18 and 19. The event is being organized in collaboration with the Nepal Tourism Board and is expected to play a key role in marketing the circuit as a new rural tourism destination. Officials believe that participation in the tourism mart will significantly enhance visibility and attract travel operators, investors, and tourists from key markets.

Improved Accessibility Through Transport Services

To improve accessibility, local authorities have already introduced safari jeep services, making it easier for tourists to travel between villages within the circuit. According to Suraj Bhattarai, head of the tourism section at the local government, the transport service is expected to expand visitor flow and improve connectivity across rural destinations.

A Model for Sustainable Rural Tourism

Tourism expert Harisingh Gurung stated that the Bandipur–Keshavtar Homestay Circuit has the potential to become a pioneering model for rural tourism in Nepal. He emphasized that the project aims to establish a unique identity for Nepal’s community-based tourism on the global stage.

Experts also highlighted that preserving local culture, traditions, and lifestyles while promoting tourism is essential for long-term sustainability. The project is expected to contribute significantly to strengthening community livelihoods and ensuring balanced tourism development.

The Bandipur–Keshavtar Homestay Circuit represents a forward-looking initiative that integrates culture, community participation, and sustainable tourism development. With coordinated efforts from local governments and tourism stakeholders, the project is expected to transform the region into a leading rural tourism destination in Nepal.
