Nepal has, for the first time, marked the International Wellness Day with a series of high-level discussions and collaborative engagements aimed at positioning the country as a global wellness tourism destination. The event, organized by the Hotel Association Nepal in collaboration with UK–Nepal Business Network, brought together key stakeholders in Lalitpur on Wednesday.
The program saw participation from hotel entrepreneurs, wellness experts, representatives from the private sector, academic institutions, and development partners, reflecting a growing national interest in wellness as an emerging tourism segment.

Wellness Tourism Identified as Strategic Opportunity
Speaking at the event, HAN President Binayak Shah highlighted wellness tourism as a transformative opportunity for Nepal’s global tourism positioning. He noted that the observance aligns with the global recognition of April 15 as International Wellness Day, an initiative supported by the United Nations.
Shah emphasized that wellness tourism has also been prioritized in the government’s recent 100-day action plan, signaling a policy-level commitment to developing the sector. According to him, Nepal’s natural assets and cultural heritage offer a strong foundation for attracting wellness-focused travelers from across the world.
Promotional Campaign and Strategy Near Completion
During the event, a promotional video on wellness tourism was officially launched in coordination with the Nepal Tourism Board and the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation. The video aims to strengthen Nepal’s visibility in the international wellness tourism market.
Ratish Basnyat, team leader of Nepal in Business Growth, shared that the National Wellness Tourism Strategy is in its final stage of preparation. He stated that coordinated efforts are underway to elevate wellness tourism to a national priority sector, integrating policy, investment, and market development.
Similarly, Nepal Tourism Board CEO Deepak Raj Joshi stressed the importance of innovation in developing wellness tourism products. He underscored the need for investment, skill development, certification standards, and strong branding to ensure Nepal remains competitive in the global market.
Bridging Tradition with Modern Wellness Experiences
A key highlight of the program was a panel discussion titled “Strategic Intent to Market Reality – Wellness Tourism,” moderated by Kanchan Gurung and chaired by Ram Krishna Lamichhane. Panelists including Dr. Ramesh Poudel, Suresh Puri, Yubika Bhandari, and Dr. Ravi Shikhawat, explored how Nepal can effectively translate its wellness potential into market-ready products.
Discussions centered on the country’s deep-rooted traditions in Ayurveda and holistic healing, emphasizing the need to integrate these practices into modern tourism offerings. Panelists agreed that authenticity, sustainability, and experience-based services will be key to differentiating Nepal in the global wellness market.
Industry Calls for Collaboration and Capacity Building
During the session, HAN executive committee member Ashlesha Karki highlighted the vast potential of wellness tourism in Nepal. She stressed the importance of collaboration among government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and investors to unlock this potential.
Panelists also identified key challenges, including a shortage of skilled human resources. Dr. Ramesh Poudel pointed out that capacity building and training will be critical to ensuring quality service delivery. Meanwhile, Yubika Bhandari noted that even small, targeted improvements can generate meaningful results in enhancing tourist experiences. Dr. Ravi Shikhawat emphasized the importance of developing comprehensive, experience-driven wellness services that go beyond traditional offerings to meet evolving global expectations.
Government Signals Long-Term Commitment
Concluding the event, Joint Secretary Indu Ghimire from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation called for collective responsibility in promoting wellness tourism. She urged stakeholders to begin preparations for “Wellness Year 2027,” a proposed initiative aimed at accelerating sectoral growth. Her remarks reflected the government’s intention to position wellness tourism as a long-term pillar of Nepal’s tourism strategy.

Annual Observance to Drive Awareness and Innovation
According to the organizers, International Wellness Day will now be celebrated annually in Nepal. The initiative is expected to foster collaboration, encourage innovation, and raise awareness about holistic health and sustainable tourism practices.
As Nepal seeks to diversify its tourism offerings beyond traditional adventure travel, wellness tourism is emerging as a promising avenue, one that blends the country’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and healing traditions into a globally appealing experience.
