Former Russian paratrooper Rustam Nabiev has successfully reached the summit of Mera Peak (6,470m) at 6:35 AM on April 22, continuing one of the most inspiring journeys in modern mountaineering. Nabiev, who lost both legs in 2015 following a barracks collapse, is now preparing for an ambitious attempt on Mount Everest this spring season.
Team Effort and Expedition Support
Nabiev was accompanied by teammates Loann Chechnev and Roman Abildaev during the climb. The team was guided to the summit by experienced climber Ram Kaji Shrestha, with support from guides Gyanu Rai and Rajak Kulung.
Logistical arrangements for the expedition were managed by Refuge Mera Lodge in Khare, while permit documentation was handled by Mera Alpine Treks and Expedition Pvt. Ltd. Jangbu Sherpa, owner of Refuge Mera Lodge, expressed pride in supporting the expedition. “We are truly honoured to be part of this Mera Peak expedition as a logistic service provider. Preparation for Everest Attempt
According to Mingma Gelu Sherpa, Managing Director of Seven Summit Adventure, Nabiev is now preparing to attempt Mount Everest this spring with the Seven Summits Club. The successful ascent of Mera Peak is considered a crucial acclimatization and confidence-building step ahead of the Everest expedition.
A Journey Defined by Resilience
Nabiev’s latest achievement adds to an already extraordinary high-altitude record. In October 2021, he became the first double amputee to summit Mount Manaslu (8,163m), reaching the top on October 2 alongside a team of Sherpa climbers from Imagine Nepal Treks. Prior to that, he had climbed Mount Elbrus and survived two clinical deaths following the accident that changed his life. His journey from a life-threatening tragedy to conquering some of the world’s highest peaks has made him a global symbol of determination and resilience.
Inspiration from Fellow Adaptive Climbers
Nabiev’s achievements follow in the footsteps of Hari Budha Magar, a Nepali-British veteran and single amputee who made history in 2023 by becoming the first above-the-knee double amputee to summit Mount Everest. Together, these climbers are redefining the boundaries of mountaineering, proving that physical limitations do not define human potential.
