An eight-member team from 8K Expeditions successfully summited Mount Makalu (8,485m) on Sunday morning, marking another major achievement in what is emerging as one of the busiest climbing seasons on the world’s fifth-highest mountain.
The summit team included IFMGA guide Markus Richard Bolt, Paul Reid Clarke, Saeed Khameis Beraheim Mahyos Almemari, VR, IFMGA guide Ashok Lama, Kamdorji Sherpa, Pema Rinje Sherpa, and Nawang Sherpa. Expedition officials confirmed that all members safely reached the summit and have now begun their descent toward lower camps.
More Climbers Preparing for Summit Push
According to the expedition company, other climbers from 8K Expeditions currently stationed at Base Camp are completing their acclimatization rotations and preparing for their own summit attempts, depending on favorable weather conditions. The successful ascent reflects a strong summit window this spring, drawing a large number of climbers to Makalu.
Makalu: A Technically Demanding Himalayan Giant
Located in Nepal’s Mahalangur Himal range along the border with Tibet, Mount Makalu is widely regarded as one of the most technically challenging among the 14 peaks above 8,000 metres. Known for its steep faces, exposed ridgelines, and harsh alpine conditions, the mountain demands high levels of endurance, technical skill, and experience, even for seasoned climbers.
Strong Logistical Support Behind the Success
8K Expeditions credited Base Camp Manager Pemba R. Sherpa for his effective coordination and logistical management throughout the expedition. His support was instrumental in ensuring a smooth and successful summit push.
Series of Recent Successes Highlight Active Season
The latest summit comes amid a series of notable achievements on Makalu this season. Just a day earlier, veteran climber Lakpa Sherpa, widely known as “Makalu Lakpa,” reached the summit for a record ninth time as part of a Seven Summit Treks expedition. Similarly, Bangladeshi mountaineer Babar Ali recently made history by becoming the first climber from his country to summit Makalu, further highlighting the mountain’s growing international appeal.
