Gurans (rhododendron) flowers are currently in full bloom along the Mundum Trail, one of the 100 designated tourist destinations by the Government of Nepal, turning the entire trekking corridor into a vibrant natural spectacle. The Mundum Trail, one of the 100 officially designated tourist destinations by the Government of Nepal, is currently witnessing a spectacular bloom of rhododendrons (gurans), turning the entire trekking route into a vibrant natural paradise.
Different species of rhododendrons (gurans) in red, white, and pink are now fully blooming across forests and grassy hillsides along the trail, creating a breathtaking landscape that is captivating every visitor passing through the region.

Rising Domestic and International Tourist Interest
Located in the eastern hills, the Mundum Trail starts from Tawa Bhanjyang in Khidima, Sakela Rural Municipality–3 of Khotang. Locals report a noticeable increase in both domestic and international tourists arriving to observe the seasonal rhododendron bloom along with other natural attractions such as chimali and chhamp flowers. Tourists are particularly drawn to the dense forests and open grasslands where rhododendrons (gurans) grow in abundance, forming natural carpets of color that enhance the trail’s scenic appeal.
Social Media Boosting Trail Popularity
Recently, a trekking team led by travel enthusiast Ojanbabu Acharya, popularly known as “Hindne Manchhe,” completed the four-day Mundum Trail journey and shared vivid photographs of the blooming landscape on social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram.
The team included Lal Bahadur Magar (LB) from Kharmi, Sanjiv Rai from Halesi Tuwachung Municipality–3, and Sanzit Rai from Sakela Rural Municipality–3. Their images of diverse rhododendron (gurans) species have gone viral locally, with many nature lovers resharing the content and promoting the trail online. As a result, internal tourist flow has significantly increased, with many travelers now planning visits specifically to witness the rhododendron (gurans) season.

A Living Experience of Nature and Culture
Trekking enthusiasts describe the Mundum Trail as a unique blend of nature and cultural experience. According to traveler “Hindne Manchhe,” the trail offers an unmatched opportunity to experience pristine nature, including grazing grasslands, traditional livestock farming, and local hospitality.
He noted that visitors can enjoy freshly prepared yak milk, ride horses across open meadows, and experience the simplicity of rural Himalayan life. The trail is especially popular in spring and autumn, when seasonal flowers and alpine landscapes create a “heavenly experience” for trekkers.

Rich Biodiversity and Indigenous Heritage
Research indicates that more than 18 species of rhododendrons (gurans) have been identified in the Maiyung and surrounding areas, with further classification still ongoing. The Mundum Trail passes through the culturally rich Kirat regions of Khotang, Bhojpur, Solukhumbu, and Sankhuwasabha.
The route includes major elevations such as Tembke Hill (3,165m), Maiyung, Salpa Pokhari (3,750m), and Silichung (4,165m), offering a diverse trekking experience. The trail reflects the Kirat community’s historical traditions and is inspired by the oral epic “Mundum,” which describes indigenous lifestyle, culture, and spirituality.
Tourism Growth Supported by Local Hospitality
Local herders and farmers have adapted to increasing tourism by offering homestay-style accommodations and traditional “goat-stay” facilities. Visitors are provided with local food such as buckwheat dishes, millet-based meals, fresh dairy products, and organic vegetables. Livestock grazing, including sheep, yaks, and horses, remains an integral part of the landscape, adding to the authentic rural experience.

Adventure and Wildlife Attractions
The trail is also home to rich biodiversity, including birds, wild animals such as red panda, and a variety of medicinal plants and forest species like chilaune, oak, and lokta. With its combination of dense forests, open grasslands, cultural villages, and mountain viewpoints, the Mundum Trail offers an immersive trekking experience that appeals to both adventure seekers and nature lovers.
Emerging as a Premier Eco-Tourism Destination
With its vibrant rhododendron (gurans) bloom, growing social media visibility, and increasing domestic tourist arrivals, the Mundum Trail is rapidly emerging as one of Nepal’s most attractive eco-tourism destinations. Officials and tourism promoters believe that the trail’s unique blend of biodiversity, cultural heritage, and community-based tourism will continue to strengthen its position as a key trekking route in eastern Nepal, especially during the peak spring season.
