The Embassy of Nepal in Colombo successfully organized a series of commemorative events marking the 2570th Buddha Jayanti and Vesak Day, underscoring the longstanding civilizational, cultural, and spiritual ties between Nepal and Sri Lanka. The programs brought together diplomats, scholars, spiritual leaders, and practitioners to reflect on Buddhist teachings and their relevance in contemporary global society. The celebrations combined diplomatic dialogue, academic discourse, and spiritual practice, reinforcing Nepal’s role in promoting Buddhist heritage and mindful leadership across the region.

Regional Diplomatic Dialogue Focuses on Mindful Leadership

As part of the main commemorative program, the Embassy of Nepal in Colombo, in partnership with the Bandaranaike Academy for Leadership & Public Policy (BALPP), hosted a Regional Diplomatic Dialogue on Mindful Leadership and Spiritual Wellbeing on 2 May 2026 at the Embassy premises.

The dialogue gathered ambassadors from Indonesia and Bangladesh, representatives of international organizations, Buddhist clergy, mindfulness practitioners, scholars, and civil society leaders. Discussions centered on the role of mindfulness in leadership, diplomacy, governance, and public policy.

Ambassador of Nepal to Sri Lanka, Dr. Purna Bahadur Nepali, welcomed participants and highlighted the shared Buddhist heritage between Nepal and Sri Lanka. He emphasized that mindful leadership can serve as a practical framework for ethical governance and regional harmony. Dr. Tara de Mel, Executive Director of BALPP, introduced the Mindful Leadership Regional Initiative, aimed at integrating mindfulness practices into leadership development programs across South Asia.

Meditation and Mindfulness Sessions Enrich Participants in Colombo

A key highlight of the dialogue was guided meditation sessions conducted by Ven. K. Dhammaoshada Thero, representing the Nissaranavanaya Meditation Centre and its Chief Meditation Master Ven. U. Dhammajiva. These sessions allowed participants to directly experience contemplative practices rooted in Buddhist tradition in Colombo.

Dr. Kaushalya Perera delivered an insightful presentation on the “Science of Mindfulness,” explaining its role in stress reduction, emotional regulation, decision-making, and overall mental well-being. Adding a practical dimension, Ms. Hubika Joshi conducted a session on mindful movement, emphasizing the importance of integrating physical awareness with mental clarity.

Buddhism, Science, and Spirituality Explored in Colombo Pre-Conference Event

Continuing the Buddha Jayanti and Vesak commemorations, the Embassy of Nepal in Colombo, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka-Nepal Buddhist Association, organized a Pre-Conference Event on Buddhism, Science, and Spirituality on 4 May 2026 in Colombo.

The program began with the national anthem, followed by introductory remarks by Mr. Krishan Buddhika. Welcome remarks were delivered by Ven. Wetara Mahinda Thero, who stressed the importance of dialogue between ancient knowledge systems and modern disciplines.

A keynote address by Prof. Vajira H. W. Dissanayake on “Professional Life Guided by Spirituality” highlighted how ethical values derived from spiritual traditions can shape responsible professional conduct. Ambassador Dr. Purna Bahadur Nepali delivered a special address, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming International Research Symposium as a platform for intellectual exchange and cross-cultural understanding.

Expert Panel Discusses Integration of Science and Buddhist Wisdom

A major attraction of the event was a panel discussion titled “Buddhism, Science, and Spirituality,” moderated by Dr. Padmasiri Ranawakaarachchi. The panel included Ven. Dr. Seela Gothami Therani, His Eminence Shyalpa Rinpoche, Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, Dr. Bibek Sharma, and Ven. Wetara Mahinda Thero.

The discussion explored how Buddhist philosophy and modern scientific approaches can complement each other in addressing global challenges such as mental health, ethical governance, and social harmony. Experts emphasized that integrating spiritual wisdom with scientific inquiry can help develop more compassionate and balanced approaches to development and human wellbeing.

During the event, Dr. Ravindu Abeywardhana presented a formal call for papers for the upcoming International Research Symposium on Buddhism, Science, and Spirituality, scheduled for 5 September 2026. Researchers, academics, and practitioners have been invited to submit papers by 30 July 2026, focusing on interdisciplinary studies that bridge spirituality, science, and social development.

Pirith Chanting Ceremony Invokes Blessings for Peace

In addition to academic and diplomatic programs, the Embassy of Nepal in Colombo organized a traditional Pirith Chanting Ceremony on 4 May 2026. The ceremony began with floral offerings to a Buddha statue, followed by Pirith chanting performed by Buddhist monks and a nun, invoking blessings for peace, harmony, and collective wellbeing.

Ambassador Dr. Purna Bahadur Nepali welcomed guests and underscored the spiritual significance of Buddha Jayanti. Ven. Wetara Mahinda Thero reflected on the core teachings of Lord Buddha, emphasizing compassion and mindfulness in daily life. Mr. Janaka Edirisinghe expressed appreciation for the Embassy’s initiative in promoting Buddhist values and fostering cultural unity.
