Nepal Naturally Suited for Global Wellness Tourism

Officiating Chief Executive Officer of the Nepal Tourism Board, Hikmat Singh Ayer, said Nepal is naturally one of the world’s most suitable destinations for wellness travel due to its unique combination of spirituality, culture, nature, and adventure.

He emphasized that wellness is not merely a service industry but a complete lifestyle deeply connected with Nepal’s traditions and environment. “Nepal can inspire the world through nature, culture, and adventure experiences,” Ayer said. “Our culture and natural environment themselves are among the strongest resources for wellness tourism.”

International Expert Highlights Nepal’s Global Potential

The keynote speaker of the programme, Deniz Kucukusta, Assistant Dean at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management under the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, delivered a presentation titled “Nepal: Sacred Land to Wellness Destination.” She explained that modern travelers across the world are increasingly seeking healing, spiritual balance, mental peace, and meaningful experiences rather than conventional tourism alone.

According to her, Nepal possesses natural strengths that position it as a future global leader in wellness tourism. Professor Kucukusta identified several major global wellness tourism trends, including spiritual and transformational travel, nature-based wellness, forest therapy, mindfulness, and digital detox experiences.

“Nepal does not need to invent wellness; it only needs to organize and present what already exists naturally,” she said. She also stressed that preserving Nepal’s originality and involving local communities are essential for ensuring sustainable development in wellness tourism.

Yoga and Traditional Practices Highlighted

Yoga expert Prakash Acharya spoke about the importance of yoga and pranayama in maintaining healthy lifestyles. He warned that rapid modernization and changing lifestyles are gradually distancing people from authentic yoga practices rooted in traditional philosophy. “Yoga is not just physical exercise; it is a complete way of life,” he said, emphasizing the importance of regular breathing and meditation practices for mental and physical well-being.

Similarly, wellness campaigner Prerana Shah said wellness has become one of the world’s fastest-growing industries, and Nepal should position itself globally not only as a trekking destination but also as a wellness destination. “Our culture, food, and daily lifestyle already contain authentic wellness practices,” she said. “We do not need to imitate other countries; we need to preserve and promote our originality.”

Sound Healing Session Opens Programme

The programme began with a special sound healing session designed to provide mental relaxation and positive energy through therapeutic sound experiences. Senior Officer Robin Regmi of the Nepal Tourism Board facilitated the event and stated that Nepal is actively promoting wellness tourism at a time when the world is increasingly searching for peace, healing, and mental well-being amid global instability.

The event was attended by tourism entrepreneurs, yoga and wellness experts, senior tourism officials, and stakeholders, including Joint Secretary Indu Ghimire, Chief of the Tourism Division under the ministry, and Director General of the Department of Tourism Nepal Ram Krishna Lamichhane.

Focus on Sustainable and Authentic Wellness Tourism

Participants concluded that Nepal’s greatest strength lies in its spiritual traditions, Himalayan environment, meditation culture, natural healing systems, and community-based hospitality. Speakers agreed that long-term success in wellness tourism would depend on preserving cultural authenticity, strengthening local participation, improving wellness infrastructure, and effectively branding Nepal as a peaceful and healing destination in the global tourism market.
