A joint delegation of the European Union and ambassadors of EU member states based in New Delhi paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation of Nepal today, marking an important diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening cooperation in tourism, culture, and civil aviation sectors.
The meeting was held with the Honorable Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Khadak Raj Paudel, at the ministry in Kathmandu. The visiting delegation included the EU Ambassador to Nepal along with ambassadors representing various European Union member states accredited to New Delhi. The discussions centered on Nepal’s ongoing initiatives to develop and promote its tourism, cultural heritage, and civil aviation sectors, along with potential areas of expanded collaboration between Nepal and European countries.
EU Expresses Interest in Strengthening Tourism and Aviation Cooperation
During the meeting, the EU ambassadors expressed keen interest in Nepal’s policy priorities and development agenda in the tourism and aviation sectors. Minister Paudel underscored that tourism plays a crucial role in Nepal’s economic and social development, contributing significantly to employment generation, foreign exchange earnings, and local economic upliftment. He noted that Nepal is prioritizing several niche tourism segments, including mountain tourism, adventure tourism, wellness tourism, yoga and meditation-based tourism, and cultural tourism, as strategic pillars for future growth.
The minister highlighted that Nepal is preparing for major international tourism initiatives, including the upcoming wellness-focused tourism year in 2027 and the ambitious national campaign Visit Nepal 2085, which aims to attract a significant increase in international arrivals and reposition Nepal as a global tourism destination. He expressed confidence that cooperation with European nations would play a vital role in achieving these objectives.
Civil Aviation Safety and EU Air Safety List Discussed
A key agenda of the discussion was Nepal’s civil aviation sector and its ongoing efforts to improve safety standards and operational efficiency. Minister Paudel informed the delegation that Nepal is actively working to enhance its aviation safety framework and institutional capacity.
He specifically mentioned ongoing reforms aimed at removing Nepal from the European Union Air Safety List, a step that would significantly improve international confidence in Nepal’s aviation sector and boost air connectivity with European destinations. The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to aligning Nepal’s aviation standards with global best practices through regulatory strengthening, infrastructure upgrades, and technical collaboration with international partners.
