The Embassy of Nepal in Colombo organized a grand celebration of International Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) Day 2026 at the Eagle Hall of Waters Edge Hotel, Colombo, on Friday, May 29. The event brought together distinguished dignitaries, tourism stakeholders, mountaineering experts, diplomats, media representatives, and friends of Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives in a shared celebration of mountain heritage, adventure tourism, and cultural friendship.
The program commemorated the historic first successful ascent of Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa on May 29, 1953. More than a remembrance of mountaineering history, the event served as an important platform to promote Nepal’s tourism industry, particularly adventure and mountain tourism, while also strengthening Nepal-Sri Lanka relations through cultural and people-to-people connections.

The celebration was graced by Deputy Minister of Defence of Sri Lanka Aruna Jayasekera as the Chief Guest and Hanif Yusoof, Governor of the Former Western Province, as the Guest of Honour. The ceremony began with a traditional Puja Dance performance welcoming the dignitaries, followed by the lighting of the oil lamp and the playing of the national anthems of Nepal and Sri Lanka.
