The Gandaki Province government has announced a strong focus on promoting domestic tourism in the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84 BS. The new policy direction aims to strengthen internal tourism activities through targeted initiatives such as the “First Home, Then Abroad” campaign and the “Lake to Lake” programme, encouraging Nepali citizens to explore destinations within the country before traveling abroad.
Policy Statement Presented in Provincial Assembly
The annual policies and programmes were unveiled on Tuesday in the Gandaki Provincial Assembly by Province Chief Dilliraj Bhatta. In his address, he outlined a comprehensive tourism development vision that places tourism at the center of economic growth, cultural preservation, and community development across the province.
“One District, One Tourist Destination” Initiative
One of the key highlights of the new policy is the implementation of the “One District, One Tourist Destination” programme. Under this initiative, each district in Gandaki Province will be identified and developed as a major tourist attraction. The policy also emphasizes the promotion of local culture, indigenous traditions, festivals, lifestyles, and locally produced goods, aiming to integrate tourism with community identity and economic empowerment.
Promotion of Homestay and Farm Stay Tourism
To enhance visitor experiences and generate income at the grassroots level, the provincial government plans to upgrade and commercialize homestay and farm-stay facilities. These initiatives are expected to provide tourists with authentic rural experiences while directly benefiting local households through tourism-based income. Officials believe that strengthening community-based tourism will help reduce migration pressures and create sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.
Development of Religious Tourism Circuit
The policy also includes a major focus on religious tourism. A dedicated pilgrimage circuit will be developed connecting key spiritual destinations such as Damodar Kunda, Muktinath Temple, Devghat, and Trivenidham. This initiative aims to promote Gandaki Province as a major center for spiritual tourism while improving accessibility, infrastructure, and facilities for pilgrims. The government also plans to expand tourism infrastructure and strengthen emergency rescue and safety services along major routes.
Completion of Iconic Infrastructure Projects
Among the priority infrastructure projects, the government has announced its intention to complete the ambitious “Round Fewa: View Fewa” project. This initiative is expected to enhance the aesthetic and recreational value of the Pokhara region, particularly around Fewa Lake.
Additionally, plans have been included to construct a pedestrian selfie bridge over Fewa Lake, which is expected to become a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists. A glass bridge at Rupa Lake has also been incorporated into the provincial tourism development agenda.
Trekking Route Upgradation in Key Mountain Regions
The provincial government has also prioritized the upgrading of trekking routes across major mountain regions, including Manaslu, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Dhorpatan. These regions are already globally recognized trekking destinations, and improvements in infrastructure, signage, and safety systems are expected to enhance the overall trekking experience. Authorities believe that improved trekking infrastructure will help increase tourist arrivals, extend visitor stays, and promote sustainable adventure tourism in the Himalayas.
“Visit Gandaki” Campaign for International Tourism Growth
In an effort to boost international tourism, the province has set an ambitious target of doubling tourist arrivals from India and China over the next five years. This goal will be pursued through the “Visit Gandaki: Enjoy Nature and Culture” campaign. The campaign will focus on marketing Gandaki Province as a premier destination for nature-based, cultural, and adventure tourism, highlighting its unique landscapes, biodiversity, and heritage sites.
Focus on Adventure Tourism and Safety Enhancement
Alongside promotional activities, the provincial government has also emphasized the importance of adventure tourism development. Activities such as trekking, rafting, paragliding, and mountaineering are expected to receive greater institutional support.
At the same time, the policy highlights improved safety measures for tourists, including better rescue services, emergency preparedness systems, and coordinated response mechanisms in remote and high-altitude areas.
The new policy framework reflects Gandaki Province’s long-term vision of transforming itself into a leading tourism hub in South Asia. By combining domestic tourism promotion, infrastructure development, cultural preservation, and international marketing, the province aims to build a more sustainable and inclusive tourism economy that benefits both visitors and local communities.
