Mustang district has witnessed a significant rise in foreign tourist arrivals, with more than 142,000 international visitors arriving in the first five months of 2026. According to the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), NTNC ACAP, Jomsom, a total of 142,739 foreign tourists visited the region between January and May.
The growing influx highlights Mustang’s increasing popularity as one of Nepal’s premier Himalayan tourism destinations, known for its unique landscapes, cultural heritage, and religious significance.
Majority of Visitors from SAARC Countries
Of the total arrivals, 129,341 tourists were from SAARC countries, while 13,398 visitors came from other international markets. ACAP Jomsom Office Chief Rajesh Gupta stated that SAARC nationals continue to dominate tourist arrivals in the region.
In May alone, Mustang recorded 65,994 foreign visitors, including 61,798 from SAARC nations and 4,196 from other countries, reflecting a sharp seasonal surge during the spring travel period.
Sharp Increase Compared to Previous Year
The data shows a notable increase compared to the same period last year. Between January and May 2025, a total of 55,753 foreign tourists visited Mustang. In contrast, the figure rose to 86,986 visitors during the same period in 2026, indicating strong year-on-year growth in tourism activity.
Authorities say the increase reflects improved accessibility, rising global interest in Himalayan destinations, and strong cross-border travel from India.
Dominance of Indian Tourists in the SAARC Segment
According to ACAP, approximately 91 percent of the total visitors in 2026 came from SAARC countries, with Indian tourists making up nearly the entire share within this category.
In May alone, 94 percent of SAARC visitors and 6 percent of non-SAARC visitors traveled to Mustang. Officials noted that Indian tourists continue to be the backbone of Mustang’s tourism sector due to cultural and religious connectivity.
Muktinath Pilgrimage Drives Tourist Flow
ACAP Chief Gupta stated that more than 80 percent of Indian tourists visiting Jomsom during the summer holiday season travel to Muktinath Temple. The sacred Hindu-Buddhist pilgrimage site remains one of the most important attractions in the region, significantly influencing tourist movement patterns. The combination of religious tourism and Himalayan adventure travel has positioned Mustang as a key destination for both domestic and international visitors.
Comparison with Previous Year’s Total Arrivals
In 2025, Mustang welcomed a total of 161,122 foreign tourists throughout the year. With over 142,000 visitors already recorded in just the first five months of 2026, tourism authorities expect the region to potentially surpass last year’s total if the current trend continues.

The steady growth in tourist arrivals underscores Mustang’s rising global appeal as a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and spiritual significance. Authorities believe continued infrastructure improvements and targeted tourism promotion will further strengthen Mustang’s position as a leading destination in Nepal’s Himalayan tourism landscape.
