Swiss leisure airline Edelweiss officially launched its first-ever non-stop flight between Zurich and Windhoek, Namibia, on June 1, marking a significant milestone in expanding air connectivity between Europe and southern Africa. Flight WK82 departed from Zurich Airport at 10:15 a.m. carrying 285 passengers on board for the Namibian capital. The inaugural service was operated using HB-IHF, Edelweiss’ newest Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which joined the airline’s fleet in March this year. The launch of the new route represents a strategic expansion of Edelweiss’ African network while providing travelers with direct access to one of Africa’s most sought-after tourism destinations.
Ceremonial Send-Off at Zurich Airport
Prior to departure, the inaugural flight received a ceremonial farewell at Zurich Airport, highlighting the significance of the new route for both tourism and aviation sectors. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the departure gate in the presence of key aviation and tourism officials, including Bernd Bauer, Chief Executive Officer of Edelweiss; Rolf Hancock, Vice President Aviation Development of Flughafen Zürich AG; and Matthias Lemcke, Director Europe of the Namibia Tourism Board.

The officials joined the flight crew in symbolically inaugurating the direct service, underscoring the growing tourism and economic ties between Switzerland and Namibia. The atmosphere at the airport reflected enthusiasm among passengers and industry stakeholders alike, as the new route is expected to strengthen travel opportunities, tourism cooperation, and business exchange between the two countries.
Twice-Weekly Flights to Windhoek
Edelweiss has initially scheduled the Zurich–Windhoek route to operate twice weekly, with flights departing every Monday and Friday. Due to anticipated demand and growing interest in Namibia as a travel destination, the airline announced plans to increase the frequency beginning in mid-July 2026.
From that period until the end of October, flights will operate three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The expanded schedule is expected to provide travelers with greater flexibility and improved connectivity during Namibia’s peak tourism season.
Namibia Emerging as a Premier Travel Destination
Commenting on the launch, Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer emphasized Namibia’s unique appeal for international travelers. “Namibia fascinates with its unique combination of endless expanses, impressive landscapes, fascinating wildlife and a starry sky that is second to none. We are delighted to be able to offer our guests this exceptional travel destination nonstop from Zurich from now on,” Bauer said.
Namibia has increasingly gained recognition among global travelers for its dramatic desert landscapes, wildlife experiences, adventure tourism, and sustainable tourism initiatives. Attractions such as the Namib Desert, Etosha National Park, Skeleton Coast, and the country’s rich cultural heritage continue to attract visitors from around the world. Industry experts believe the new direct connection will significantly enhance accessibility for European travelers seeking premium long-haul leisure experiences.

Strengthening Edelweiss’ Presence in Southern Africa
With the addition of Windhoek, Edelweiss continues to strengthen its footprint across southern Africa. The new route complements the airline’s broader strategy of expanding leisure travel destinations while responding to increasing customer demand for direct and convenient international connections.
The introduction of the Airbus A350-900 on the route also highlights the airline’s focus on modernizing its fleet and enhancing passenger comfort. The aircraft offers improved fuel efficiency, quieter cabins, and upgraded onboard amenities designed for long-haul travel. Aviation analysts note that direct services such as Zurich–Windhoek can play a key role in supporting tourism recovery, facilitating economic exchange, and boosting destination visibility in international markets.
Tourism Industry Welcomes New Connectivity
The Namibia Tourism Board welcomed the launch as an important step toward strengthening Namibia’s presence in the European tourism market. Tourism stakeholders believe the direct route will encourage higher visitor arrivals from Switzerland and neighboring European countries by reducing travel time and eliminating transit connections.
The new service is also expected to support Namibia’s tourism economy by attracting high-value travelers interested in nature, wildlife, luxury safaris, adventure tourism, and eco-friendly travel experiences. As global travel demand continues to recover and evolve, airlines and tourism authorities are increasingly focusing on strategic long-haul routes that connect travelers directly to emerging and experience-driven destinations.

Expanding Opportunities for Leisure and Business Travel
Beyond tourism, the direct Zurich–Windhoek route is expected to create broader opportunities for business travel, trade, and cultural exchange between Europe and Namibia. Improved connectivity can strengthen cooperation across sectors including hospitality, aviation, conservation tourism, and investment promotion. For travelers, the route provides a faster and more seamless option to explore southern Africa, while also positioning Zurich as an important gateway for African tourism within Europe.
A New Era of Direct Connectivity
The successful launch of Edelweiss’ inaugural Zurich–Windhoek flight marks the beginning of a new chapter in European-African air travel connectivity. With increasing flight frequencies, strong passenger interest, and Namibia’s growing international appeal, the route is expected to become an important link for tourism and economic engagement in the years ahead. The new service not only expands Edelweiss’ global destination network but also reinforces Namibia’s status as one of Africa’s most extraordinary and accessible travel destinations for international visitors.
